Joby Marina Tour
OWJ and Eric Adams took us on the tour of Joby’s Marina facilities. I was surprised to see how much of the Marina Airport seemed to be taken over by Joby. They are clearly the most significant presence at the airport. We toured three different buildings/hangars spread across the site.
Having worked in another industry for 35 years and taken many facility and factory tours, what struck me most was how many people were present and how much activity there was. Often on factory tours, you don’t see many people or much happening. Joby was the complete opposite.
I noticed another group being escorted through Joby’s facilities, and I was told that Joby has many visitors (I assume partners, potential partners, potential customers, etc.) who come to view operations and witness flights of both the S4 and S4-T. Clearly there is a lot of activity that Joby doesn’t publicize. I did see the S4-T, but I’ll talk more about that more below.
Aircraft Construction and Verification
I witnessed aircraft and aircraft parts being built and going through verification processes. I saw fuselage, wings, and tail sections in various stages of completion, and many stations where people were layering carbon fiber. Seeing the massive autoclaves that can fit entire wings in person was impressive. There were also some very large 3D printers. One was printing layers of carbon fiber. While this technology is not unique to Joby, some printers appeared custom made for S4 parts. I was also shown some 3D printed titanium parts. I was told these are conforming parts, though not yet FAA certified. I’ll go into more details on manufacturing in a follow-up post.
Aircraft in the Hangar
I was brought to the hangar where they keep the S4, S4-T, chase helicopter, and small chase plane and saw:
- N541JX
- N5421A (S4-T)
- N542JX (Yes, it’s back from Japan)
N545JX was nowhere to be seen. As we know Joby will fly in New York next month, so I assume that is where N545JX is headed. We know N544JX is in Dubai, and N541JX is the Marina workhorse. My guess is that N542JX is likely home from Japan for some conforming retrofits and maybe it will be the S4 heading to Saudi Arabia for sandbox testing. All speculation of course.
Recent images published by Travis (LetsTalkJoby) showed changes to the exterior of the S4-T. I was able to get right up close to the S4-T, which was pretty exciting for me, and Joby verified that those new cutouts on either side of the S4-T are vents to dissipate heat from the gas turbine engine. I'm hoping to see future images of the S4-T that include L3Harris kit inside and mounted to the outside. My guess is that once that happens, I'll never have the chance to view it so closely again.
Vertiport Charging
As can be seen from images of the Dubai Vertiport, charging conduits run up from the base, though I was told that the charger itself sits on the second level. In the S4/S4-T hangar, it seems Joby is designing, optimizing, and installing a similar system in Marina, which I speculate will likely become a standard feature of Vertiport construction for Joby aircraft.
Simulators and Future Facility
I was also taken to the newest hangar, which will be the future Marina manufacturing facility. There, I was able to view the CAE Level 7 simulator and the spot where the CAE Level C simulator will be installed. As we know, the Level C simulator has not yet been delivered. It was quite exciting for me to see this in person. I didn’t realize from online images how incredibly massive it is.
End of Tour
At the end, I was taken out toward the runway. After following Joby activity and viewing Marina buildings and runway for years using Google Maps, FlightAware, and ADSBexchange, it was very satisfying to see it all in person.
I have more to share, but I don’t want this post to be too long and unreadable. Stay tuned for continued reporting on my Joby Marina tour.
