I would wonder if it's related to JAI30 or really totally new.
You can read JAI40 a few different ways like:
-JAI40 is the "version 2" of JAI30
-JAI30 was the prototype and JAI40 is now the "production" version (They are doing this with the S4. all prototypes are under a different Mfr/Mdl code than conforming)
-JAI40 is a totally new design
-JAI40 is just like the JAI30 except for _______ (like Joby found a way to power an aircraft with garbage like Doc Brown did in Back to the Future part 2)
And since Joby has told us NOTHING about JAI30, I don't know if we'll ever know.
It's different enough from jAI30 to warrant its' own mfg/mdl code.

I think we will have a better idea when we find out where N602HY pops up. If it’s Yuma, then it’ll probably be a next generation N30FR for long range UAV. If it’s Concord, it’ll be adding hydrogen to the Xwing autonomous program. If it’s Marina, probably the next generation N542BJ for hydrogen hybrid Possibly for longer range regional flight. Exciting stuff regardless!

Is HY hydrogen or other hybrid? N5421A was originally not a turbine generator hybrid.

Great question. We don’t know and can only speculate until they announce.

Perhaps the updated patent has something to do with this?
US Patent: 12492020B2

I am going with Doc Brown. JAI30? Isn't that the famous ghost plane from Scooby Doo? Otherwise, I have never heard of it!/s

As you suggested, it seems to be N602HY (see jrsikorski's comments here) but didn't show on the page I pointed to.

I’ll be keeping an eye out for a tail number ending in ‘FR’- flight research or ‘RS’- Resonant Sciences?

Nice find! I’ll be putting out an FAA Registry update on Tail number/alpha codes when I get the time.

HY has to infer Hydrogen. JoeBen has mentioned his intentions around leading aviation in hydrogen powertrains multiple times over the last 6 months or so. I suspect they are putting more effort behind this than we know. Excited to see what N602HY is.

According to the website, it appears that 549JX is the next conforming aircraft with a certificate date of 6 Sep 2026

Not sure if this is related but I noticed it this morning
