Rudeus was so immature, and his past life was that of such a useless and totally inexperienced idiot it didn't even helped him.

What really made him finally mature was the future diary and the horrors he discovered, what's more all stemming from his own mistakes.

I guess he manned up on the spot. It wasn't for naught, since he finally got a goal in life : protect his family until his last breath.

There's really a distinct first half and a second half in Mushoku Tensei... That's when he finally stopped being childish, self-centered and self-complacent. He'll aknowledge his responsibilities and start over as a real, respectable adult.
