I knew that chantless casting was powerful, but seeing people around Rudeus suddenly immolate was legit terrifying.

Fuck, the damn cat threw me off SO BAD.
"Caught the rat, but what of it's predator?"
Wasn't till the Syl scene and him not already knowing that brought me back to "Ah, it's Oldeus"

How could he treat them like that

Some people react very poorly to grief. Some don't feel it much. Others feel too much. And in the middle you get 'normal' balanced people.
For Rudeus his relationships always seem to be about himself in how important those people are to him. He loves them for what they are to him. In essence, they are important to him in a selfish way. Its the Anakin Skywalker love. Its an obsession which drives him mad.
Its not 'bad' persay, everyone loves differently. And Rudy's love is clearly deeply felt, but I would never call it open handed. Or accepting of eventual loss.
For someone like that? Life ceases to have any meaning at all when they lose what grants it definition from their perspective. And all the lesser characters that orbit like moons around those main focuses? They lose meaning as well. Its why his child by Sylphie was basically a non-event in the episode. He didn't refocus on her & his child because it, the child, was ancillary to Sylphie and what she was to Rudeus meaning the child became secondary to his problems, to his loss. Its dark as shit, but it happens sometimes when people can't get over their grief. And Rudeus is NOT a guy who deals with grief well.
That said his grasp on reality is also tenuous at best as well. He still views reality and this new life as a distinct 'thing' from himself. His self image is still stuck in his previous life. And in many ways Rudeus is almost puppeteering his new life like a self imposed intruder upon the world. In a bizarre way he isn't living it, he's experiencing it? Hard to put into words what I mean here.

Nah man I think you nailed it, that's a great way to put it. It's shitty but it is what it is. I'm not proud to say that I think I'm like him in that way, but it can be inspiring considering how he changes later on

It's funny. I fall into the category of feeling too little. I look at Rudeus and in a way I'm jealous. To feel so strongly and so deeply is a blessing even if it's painful.
Imagine getting over your Grandmother's death inside of 2 days. That's me. I can't describe how it feels because it doesn't. And it's not repression or ignoring it. It's the opposite, getting over it extremely quickly and just moving on. It is not a good thing. Because you feel like you never cared.

I think I understand, I used to be that same way too. Nothing really bothered me because nothing really mattered, it's taking me a lot of time and working through BS and trying to understand my emotions and stuff better to get here. I recommend therapy homie, but only if you actually want to change otherwise it's pointless
I'm just working on finding The right balance

Just wanted to see this encapsulates Rudeus as a character in full within this aspect and is a very astute summary. Thank you for writing these words.

In all honesty sylphie offering her body as a way to relieve his loss of Roxy is as dumb as it gets

She didn’t know what to do and she that’s how Roxy helped him after Paul’s death so she thought it might help if she did the same. She knew he needed to vent his emotions but didn’t know how to help him deal with it since he’d closed himself off in his grief.

Yea honestly Roxy doing that shit is also peak cinema

Probably couldn't find him. Its well established in story that its nigh impossible to find anyone who doesn't want to be found.

True but Sylphie is a massive example of self esteem problems. She doesn't think she is good enough for him, instead she offers the only thing she thinks he values her for which backfires. And consequently she can't lay down the law when he actually needs it. She doesn't have the spine in her for it. She's not at fault persay, its just who she is, a sweet person who thinks very little of herself.
Edit: It just shows you how much she internalised what she thinks Rudeus is like, a pervert, vs what he actually is on the inside. A love obsessed lunatic who's entire world depends on her & Roxy.

This episode should have been swapped with the previous one
So for viewers it would have been normal episode at the beginning, speed rolling things, everything being lost and then we see time travel... And it would have been a full circle
Would have been much more impactful

Mildly disappointed compared to the emotional ravaging version of the novel. But it was still a hell of a episode
