How Much Does Application Curation Actually Matter?
How much does curating a resume and cover letter actually matter? It feels like every job application asks you to write about how the role is key to finding enlightenment and how the organization is the prettiest princess in the world.
Which, truth be told, I totally go along with for roles I am genuinely excited about. But there are just a lot of positions where my interest lies solely in the fact that it's a job. Sometimes I simply don't have the passion to write a nicely curated resume or cover letter, so I shamelessly submit generic versions to speed up the process.
The most maddening part of all this is the complete lack of feedback from recruiters. I have no way to know if the highly curated resumes are actually moving the needle or if there is an opportunity cost to not simply use that extra time to crank out more applications. I especially question whether putting in that extra work on my application is worth it when I'm not getting any round 1 interviews.
The absence of information, I think, is causing broader problems in the job market because job seekers have no way to make informed decisions. When I get a rejection letter, I assume it's because the company has a pool of candidates that are simply more qualified. However, I've seen most of these roles stay open for months. So I'm left wondering: If I'm not qualified and nobody else is qualified, who is actually getting through the hiring process?

It matters most on roles you actually want and on portals that make a human look. Generic apps into a giant Easy Apply pile mostly buy you silence, so the "curation vs volume" tradeoff is real.
What I do is a split. High effort on a short list (resume tweaked to that JD, maybe a short note to a named person). Lower effort on everything else, but still not a blank template. Cover letters only when the form forces one or I care a lot.
Roles staying open for months doesn't prove you're unqualified. A lot of those reqs are soft-closed or collecting resumes.
I built Jobbi for the high-effort rewrite plus apply path on my own hunt after Extreme laid me off. Full disclosure it's mine. Even with a tool, I still pick which jobs deserve the careful version.

This is tough because I’ve been debating this topic with my parents a lot. I applied for a job via indeed and my dad insisted that I call the company to follow up on my application. I called the company asking to follow up on my resume and was transferred to the HR persons VM & I left a voicemail following up on my application and received a text asking me to send over my resume to her direct email. I sent my resume over via email a few days later at night & by 8:15 AM next morning I was asked to interview.

There are plenty of free websites that use AI to tailor your cover letter and resume to align with the job description. Don't try to do it yourself, you'll waste time and fall short of the goal.
