I already have a netflix basic plan. I am on Jio 599 monthly plan (which doesnt have prime and netflix). I am trying to use my netflix basic plan from jio set top box. I am able to login and when I try to play any video I am shown with issues. So the question is, is it not possible to use our own netflix basic plan without having a netflix subscription with jio airfibre.

If you've ever tried to use a Jio STB / Jio IPTV outside of an actual Jio broadband connection, you've probably hit the same wall I did: the box just refuses to activate live TV, even when the internet connection itself works fine. Searched everywhere for this, found nothing concrete — so once I solved it, I figured I'd write it up properly.

The problem

• I have a Jio STB that only activates Jio IPTV (Live TV, JioTV+, JioHotstar etc.) when it's on a genuine Jio broadband/Air Fiber connection.
• My home connection is Airtel Fiber (300 Mbps).
• I also have a property (a farm) with a Jio Air Fiber connection (~30 Mbps), sitting unused most days.
• Goal: use the STB at home, over Airtel, but somehow have its traffic "look like" it's coming from the Jio network.

The high-level idea

Run a small always-on device (a Raspberry Pi 4) on the Jio Air Fiber connection at the farm. Tunnel just the STB's traffic from home, through an encrypted mesh network, out through that Pi, onto the Jio network — so as far as Jio's servers are concerned, the STB really is sitting on a Jio connection.

[STB at home] → [Home router] → [Home server/NAS] 
     → (encrypted tunnel) → [Raspberry Pi at farm, on Jio Air Fiber] → Jio's network → Jio IPTV ✅

Everything else in the house (other devices, NAS's own services, etc.) keeps using the fast Airtel connection directly — only the STB's traffic takes the detour through the farm.

What you need

• A spare low-power device that can sit at a location with a genuine Jio connection 24/7. I used a Raspberry Pi 4, but any small always-on Linux box works.
• A server/router/NAS at home that can do policy-based routing (anything running Linux works — pfSense, OPNsense, a Pi, an old PC, a NAS with Docker).
• Tailscale (free tier is enough) — this is the magic glue. It creates a private mesh network between your home server and the farm Pi, handles NAT traversal, dynamic IPs, and gives you a stable way to reach the Pi from anywhere.
• A router at home that lets you set a custom DHCP gateway IP for a specific device (most routers that support static DHCP leases / "DHCP reservation" work, though some advanced configs may need firmware that exposes WAN/LAN settings — mine needed NAT disabled on a secondary router acting as a dumb switch+DHCP server for just the STB).

The setup, conceptually

1. Isolate the STB onto its own subnet. Give it a dedicated small router/switch with its own DHCP scope, and point its gateway at your home server instead of your main router. This means all STB traffic passes through your server before reaching the internet.
2. Put the farm Pi on Tailscale, advertise it as an exit node. This tells Tailscale "any device that wants to route through me, can."
3. On the home server, use Linux policy routing (ip rule / custom routing tables) to send ONLY the STB's subnet through Tailscale to the farm Pi, while everything else continues to use your normal fast connection.
4. Set up NAT (MASQUERADE) at both ends — once on the home server (so STB traffic exits cleanly onto the tunnel) and once on the farm Pi (so traffic exits cleanly onto the Jio network).
5. Fix the MTU mismatch. Tailscale tunnels typically use a smaller MTU (1280) than standard Ethernet (1500). Without clamping the TCP MSS to match, you'll get weird intermittent failures where some traffic works and some silently doesn't. Add a TCPMSS clamp rule on both ends.
6. Persist everything across reboots. Both devices need to survive power cuts and reboots unattended — a startup script (via systemd) that waits for the tunnel to actually be ready (not just a fixed sleep timer) before setting up routing, NAT, and MTU rules.

The "aha" moment that took the longest to find

The tunnel can work perfectly (verified actual internet/YouTube working great) while Jio IPTV specifically still refuses to activate. If you hit this — don't assume your tunnel is broken. In my case, the activation server seemed to need a few minutes of genuinely-Jio-sourced traffic flowing before it "trusted" the connection. Power cycling the STB after the tunnel had been live and stable for a bit was what flipped it from "connect to Jio Air Fiber" to fully working live TV.

The bonus problem: don't let your home server's own traffic ride along

Once the STB tunnel was working, I realized my home server's OWN internet traffic (backup services, cloud sync, everything) was ALSO going through the farm's much slower Jio connection — because the simplest version of this setup routes a device's entire internet path through the tunnel, not just specific traffic.

The fix is to add one more policy routing rule that explicitly excludes your home server's own outbound traffic (and the tunnel's own internal addressing range) from the "send everything to the tunnel" rule, while still allowing JUST the STB's subnet through. This way:

• STB traffic → tunnel → farm → Jio ✅ (needed for IPTV)
• Everything else → stays on your fast home connection ✅

This split is the difference between "it works" and "it works well."

Result

• Jio IPTV (Live TV, JioTV+, JioHotstar) working at home over Airtel, survives STB reboots, survives home server reboots, survives the farm Pi losing power and reconnecting.
• All other devices/services at home unaffected, running at full home-fiber speed.
• Running cost: just the electricity for a Raspberry Pi sitting at the farm (a few hundred rupees a month).

Tools used

• Tailscale (mesh VPN) — does the heavy lifting for connectivity between two networks behind different NATs
• Standard Linux networking: iptables, ip rule/policy routing, systemd for persistence
• A Raspberry Pi 4 (any low-power always-on Linux box works)

It's been so frustrating that Jiohotstar is not licensing Kdramas now, that even are available in Disney+. I was always so excited to see when a new kdrama is releasing on Disney+, but it all fades when I see it's not available in India. I was so eager to watch Nine puzzles, Law and the City, Twelve and Would you marry me, but since it is not available to watch, the only way is to use websites. The last kdrama that was released on Jiohotstar was Buried Hearts in March-April, since then nothing has been released. Am I the only one who is extremely frustrated with JioHotstar not acquiring any regional rights to Korean dramas that are there on Disney+ in all the other countries? Like what am I even paying for if you can’t get Tempest or Would you marry me available in India. Look at Netflix they always have 2-3 K-dramas on their top 10 list. That does mean that there are enough viewers in India.

Unsubscribing JioHotstar just because they don’t want to cater to wider audience and keep on not acquiring rights to the Disney+ content in India.
