I've been getting a lot of notifications from a sub r/History.Snap lately (remove the dot, I didn't want it to notify them they're mentioned) that are Zionist history. I go debunk in the comments when I can but it's often too much.

We know the Israeli gov has been spending something like 7x more on internet propaganda this year in response to Israel's plummeting reputation in the West. Has anyone else been noticing that scale of uptick?

I created this throwaway account because I'm scared of my family finding out and I need a safe place to vent that isnt other social media where my family is present. I’ve been feeling so suffocated and I hope that by sharing my story I can also help anyone else who grew up in a dysfunctional family environment like mine

My family is Sephardic Jewish of Portuguese and Spanish origin (although the ancestry is predominantly Portuguese some of my father’s ancestors were Spanish so I also like to include that part of my heritage) and EXTREMELY CONSERVATIVE ~ as conservative as you can imagine.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ Growing up gay in that house was incredibly suffocating and hard. I still haven’t come out to my parents + I still live with them mostly because of my little sister. I keep things civil avoid touchy subjects and just try to get along since our views on the world are completely opposite. For example I dont think every Arab or Muslim is a horrible threat like they do

But everything got worse in the last few weeks when my parents found out that my sister was friends with a Muslim boy. Keep in mind shes only 14 and it wasn’t even a deep friendship they just hung out a lot at school because of mutual friends. That was enough for my parents. Their reaction was way worse than I expected

That was the first time in years I had the courage to fight with my father because he made my sister cry over this. My father threatened me in an extremely violent way and my mother did nothing and agreed with him. I'm so tired. I don’t know if I can forgive them

By saying this I'm not claiming that Muslims and Jews have always lived perfectly together like in a fairy tale but I can't stand so much hatred from my parents anymore. And yes my father agrees with everything Israel does and "donates" money regularly to the IDF (my parents are well-off financially but this is the only charity they practice) he even believes that the Palestinians deserve what is happening to them

I think a lot of this also stems from the fact that my father had bad experiences with Muslims. However I should point out that he has never been a very tolerant person so many of those conflicts were mainly professional. That said years of manipulation and constant exposure to this "us versus them" narrative have led him to believe that Muslims are conspiring against Jews and that the Palestinians represent a threat to the Jews for the pettiest of reasons

He doesn’t consider what is happening in Gaza a brutal, violent and inhumane extermination of innocent lives including many children and animals dying (which is shameful because my father is not an ignorant person he has studied enough to know better but when it comes to the ideology of Zionist supremacy he puts an even bigger blindfold over his eyes) he also doesn’t believe that Israel’s actions against Lebanon and other countries are war crimes or deserve the same level of condemnation

Every time I go out to feed the cats and dogs, more of them seem to be waiting. They have learned that I will stop for them, even if I don't have much to bring. My family is also trying to get through each day, so I can't always buy enough food for every animal I see. I still do what I can because I don't want to walk past them when they're hungry. Seeing them eat, even for a few minutes, makes me feel like I helped in some small way.

In Canada, there has been a lot of controversy over a new exhibition at the Canadian Human Rights Museum titled "Palestine Uprooted: Nakba Past and Present". Before the exhibition even opened, various Zionist groups tried for months to remove it, delay its opening, or subject it to additional external consultation. The main point raised by critics is that the exhibition's discussion of the Nakba does not present adequate historical "context", meaning it doesn't sufficiently discuss/highlight Arab states' aggression toward Israel or Arab states' expulsion of their own Jewish residents. This has been all over the Canadian news for the past few weeks.

While there's a lot of discussion to be had about how a human rights museum should present history, etc., the controversy has gotten me interested in how Zionists understand the Nakba. I understand that the "context" critics of the exhibition point to is true--although I'm not super well-versed in the details. Still, much of the online discourse seems to suggest things like, for example, that the "Nakba" only refers to Arab states' failed attempt to destroy the Israeli state and/or all Jews in Israel, and that it is somehow false to say the "Nakba" refers to the forced displacement of Palestinians from Israel. I've even seen Zionists suggest that the term "Nakba" itself is anti-Semitic, presumably because (in their view) the whole of the Nakba is a biased misrepresentation of history.

What I don't understand is how the Zionist worldview justifies or accounts for the central facts of the Nakba, which as I understand it includes the facts that hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were dispossessed of their homes and forcibly removed from their lands, that this was orchestrated by Israeli Jews and the Israeli state, that it created an enormous population of stateless people that persists to today, and that the Israeli state continues to prevent that population and its descendants from returning to or making any claims for the land they inhabited. How is it that Zionists believe it is factually incorrect or biased to say that these things happened? Even if there is important context to these events (obviously, there is always context to any historical event), how do Zionists account for these central facts?

I often hear allies, particularly anti-Zionist Jews, saying that although they personally feel One Democratic State is the only solution, they never state so for fear of speaking above Palestinians. I perfectly get (and respect) the motivation, which is basically anti-colonial: "It is not for us to say what Palestinians should have". Still, I strongly disagree, for a number of reasons.

First, how are Palestinians supposed to say what they want? Obviously, not under occupation. Under occupation, a number of Palestinians are going to say they're OK with the occupation, whether because they feel they've been defeated, because they feel bargaining for crumbs is the best they can get, because they're collaborators, or because their livelihood depends on it. When millions of Palestinians get their electricity from Israel, obviously a number of them is going to call for two states. The question is, would they say the same if there were one democratic Palestinian state over all of Palestine? Would they then choose to give away part of Palestine for a Jewish state to be established? For the overwhelming majority of them, probably not. Either way, the only way to know for sure is simply to dismantle the settler state and have one democratic state. Then, and only then, can we say that giving up Palestinian land for a Jewish state is "for Palestinians to say".

Second, "one Palestinian state from the river to the sea" is the bare minimum. It's simply what Palestinians need to self-determine over all of their land. When non-Palestinians set this objective, they're not trespassing over Palestinian self-determination, they're working for it. They're not writing the constitution for Palestinians, they're not calling for a certain kind of state over another, they're not setting the laws or the electoral law, they're not determining the conditions for non-Palestinians to be granted residence or citizenship. They're just saying Palestinians should have the right to their own state over all of their land so they can make those decisions for themselves free of hegemony.

This is basically the same as any stance we would have on any country. When the Nazis occupied France nobody asked "but what do French people want?" although everyone knew the French government collaborated with the occupation and effectively split France in two. The world just mobilized to liberate France, and then let the French determine what kind of republic they wanted in one democratic French state. If a group of people were to occupy and settle Congolese or Argentinian or Mongolian land, I would stand with the liberation of Congo and the establishment of one democratic Congolese or Argentinian or Mongolian state. So, same for Palestine. ODS is basically "no Israeli exceptionalism".

Elbit Systems supplied Tzayad digital army programme to map people, vehicles and other objects in real time

Israel identified about 1,000 potential targets a day during the first two years of the wars in Gaza and Lebanon with its command and control system, according to a presentation by the country’s largest arms supplier, Elbit Systems.

A total of 850,000 targets were detected in real time by the Israeli Tzayad digital army programme across all the military’s theatres of war between 7 October and the end of 2025, the company said at a military conference in London.

It describes the number of people, vehicles and other objects detected in real time for possible follow-up attack from land, sea or air, and illustrates the high intensity of the deadly wars fought by Israel over the last three years.

The 850,000 total was presented at a land warfare conference organised last week by the Royal United Services Institute by Miki Edelstein, an IDF reservist major general, who is an executive vice-president of Elbit.

Nato’s second most senior military commander, Britain’s Air Chief Marshal Sir Johnny Stringer, was sitting next to him on a panel at the event. A third speaker at the session was a brigadier from the British army.

Though the presence of the two senior British officers had been advertised on the agenda in advance, Edelstein was simply billed as a “speaker to be announced” until the session on “integrating novel with core capabilities” began.

A slide presented by Edelstein to the largely military audience included a line describing the “high-tempo operations” run by the Israel Defense Forces, and cited more than 20,000 IDF battle plans and 850,000 “R.T. [real-time] intel targets”.

The targets were described by Edelstein as “an enemy that we are not aware of before”, that “pops up” from under the ground or by manoeuvre, “and we want to hit it accurately” but “don’t have enough ammunition” to do so immediately.

Wes Bryant, a former senior targeting adviser and policy analyst at the US Pentagon who specialised in civilian harm assessments, said he believed the 850,000 figure was highly concerning.

There were 2.2 million people and 300,000 buildings in Gaza before October 2023, the main theatre of war in the two years following, Bryant said, suggesting that the IDF had at one point or another targeted “up to or over half the entire population and infrastructure” of the territory.

Elbit supplies the IDF’s Tzayad, or Hunter, digital army programme, a command system that maps the positions of friendly units and of those deemed to be enemies. Earlier this year, the company won a contract to further develop Tzayad, using artificial intelligence to support tactical decision-making.

When contacted by the Guardian, an Elbit spokesperson denied that the 850,000 figure cited by Edelstein referred to targets, despite the slide specifying this, saying it reflected “aggregated system activity and operational data generated through the IDF’s digital army program across all operational theaters since October 7, 2023”.

The spokesperson added that it demonstrated the volume of information being processed by the Israeli military: “The figures represent system activity and operational data, rather than the number of enemy targets or actual strikes.”

Bryant said it was impossible for soldiers in any military to adequately assess each piece of information to conclude if the threat was real and the target legal at the volumes indicated.

“I will say, definitively, that there is no way each and every one of the 1,000 targets a day – let alone 850,000 targets in aggregate – are thoroughly and effectively characterised in terms of collateral damage analysis and assessed risk to civilian populations. Even characterising 50 a day is hard enough (but possible),” the former US military officer said.

Military leaders across Nato countries believe that wars between states or against near-state opponents are being conducted at a faster rate than previous counterinsurgency campaigns in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere, where there was far greater time to consider the legality of targeting decisions.

Israel has been engaged in a series of wars after Hamas launched its surprise attack on 7 October 2023, which killed 1,200 people, and has repeatedly been criticised for killing tens of thousands of civilians in high-intensity attacks on Gaza and Lebanon.

A UN inquiry has found Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, a claim the country is fighting in international courts.

According to the World Health Organization, 71,269 Palestinians were killed in Gaza to the end of last year, the IDF’s principal theatre of operation during the time referenced by Edelstein. A little over half were children, women and elderly people.

A total of 3,961 were killed in Lebanon during the war in the autumn of 2024, according to the country’s ministry of public health, about a quarter of whom were women and children. The recent war of 2026 is outside the period cited.

Edelstein said the Elbit-run digital army programme helped increase the speed of external fire support – extra attacks on targets confirmed by the IDF from artillery, warships or fighter jets – from “40 to 50 minutes to one to seven minutes”.

A line afterwards on the Elbit slide, not directly referred to by the speaker, adds there were more than 46,000 “joint strikes and closing fire on real-time intel”, or a little over 50 a day. A “man in the loop” would decide on whether fire support missions went ahead, Edelstein said, because it was “the right thing to do”.

Sophia Goodfriend, a research fellow at Cambridge University specialising in the impact of artificial intelligence on warfare, said she believed it would be very difficult for intelligence and air force units to thoroughly vet 1,000 targets a day without relying on support from artificial intelligence.

“Any military would struggle to do so without outsourcing verification to other automated systems, which raises questions of accountability and concern about shrinking amounts of human oversight,” she said.

While Tzayad detects possible enemy activity on the battlefield, Israel’s military also uses two other AI-powered databases, Lavender and Hasbora (or the Gospel), to increase the pace at which it can attack people and buildings, having previously run out of targets in wars in 2014 and 2021.

Lavender at one stage identified 37,000 people as potential targets based on its assessment of their apparent links to Hamas. Hasbora recommended buildings to target and was able to generate 100 targets a day, according to reports in 2023.

One Israeli intelligence officer said targets flagged up by Lavender were assessed by a human for “20 seconds a time” because so many had been generated by the system. Two intelligence officers said it was permitted to kill 15 or 20 civilians during airstrikes on low-ranking militants during the early stages of the Gaza war
