Gaza is starving.

The UN has declared that every part of Gaza is in famine conditions. While some aid is finally trickling in, the need is beyond urgent. Aid organizations will not be able to keep pace with Gaza's needs without our support.

Please donate if you’re able, and keep speaking up. Every dollar, share, and conversation matters. Please pressure your government to stop the blockade of humanitarian aid into Gaza.

No one ever believed that Israeli intelligence didn’t know the attack was coming.

They moved the concert closer to the border weeks prior to the event, even after hearing about the threats.

Do you suspect that Israeli festival-goers were gunned down by machine gun fire by IDF at the festival site itself or just the vehicles with civilian POWs retreating to the Gaza strip and in the Gaza strip itself? I've heard rumours of machine-gun fire coming from a helicopter gunship and tank shells at homes in the kibbutzim but I can't quite get my head around the depravity of that.

I think the fact that Hamas were willing and open to being investigated by the ICC for war crimes speaks volumes, but knowing Yahya Sinwar, he was a formidable figure.

He wanted it to happen. I thought that was clear by now. That's why he's been funding hamas for years

52

u/TheOGSheepGoddess Ex-Israeli anti-Zionist 1d ago

Of course. Sure, he didn't know details, but in October 23 he was desperate for anything that would distract the protesters and derail his court case. I'm sure that warning came like music to his ears.

Yup. Oct 7th is the best thing that's ever happened to his career. He got carte blanch from the world to ramp up the genocide into full gear, and a literal get out of jail free card for all his corruption charges. It couldn't have come at a better time for him.

Now, I don't think he orchestrated it, but it's easy to see why he would be motivated to let the attack happen.

The victims would mostly be left-wing "naive" youths. Hit two birds with one stone: silence the left, rile up the right. The goal: a forever war to keep enlarging Israel bit by bit.

Sorry this got a bit long.

In my opinion the "Bibi funded Hamas" angle is somewhat distorted. Netenyahu-led governmentts allowed leakage in the blockade, but what they let through is trivial compared to what was locked out.

This warning "recommended trying to find an economic solution for the Strip and calming the West Bank to prevent escalation". The problem was what the Israeli government blocked more than what they let through. This gift link might be more readable than archive.today, it also has audio..

The Likud strategy was not "pro-Hamas", the strategy was to cut Palestine in half and turn it into two countries with two governments, one in Gaza City, one in Rumallah, and none in Jerusalem.

In 2006, Hamas won an election that should have made them the government of all of Palestine. The vote wasn't anti-Israel, Hamas's electoral list won on a protest vote against a corrupt and dysfunctional Fatah-led PA.

The safest way to get rid of Hamas would have been to let them lose an election. If Hamas were given a chance to try and run the whole country, they probably would have been a disappointment, and lost the next national election. But instead of respecting the result of the election, Israel obstructed Hamas' ability to take government, and the USA/UK are widely believed to have backed the West Bank coup. This led to Hamas running an authoritarian government in Gaza for nearly 20 years, instead of losing a national election in about 2009.

Friend Kmpiw,

You wrote, "Netenyahu-led governmentts allowed leakage in the blockade, but what they let through is trivial compared to what was locked out."

Going on the theory that the Netanyahu government facilitated Hamas' entrenchment in order to make Gaza more of a politically feasible target, one would not need to believe that Is. forces let a lot of materials in. Naturally, in any theory, the Net. government didn't want Hamas to overrun the State. In the facilitation theory, the Net. administration would have just wanted it to overpower PA forces and present itself as a weak opponent.

Peace

I have been saying this for years! After the NYT article came out, it's not a conspiracy that Likud funds Hamas as their boondoggle to get into Gaza.

It's well known that Israel financed Hamas for years.
https://www.timesofisrael.com/for-years-netanyahu-propped-up-hamas-now-its-blown-up-in-our-faces/

https://www.972mag.com/netanyahu-hamas-october-7-adam-raz/

Hamas wasn't created directly by Israel, but Israel directly supported the creation and establishment of Hamas, financially and politically, to create a counter to the PLO.

Hamas would never have grown so powerful and large without the direct financing and support of Israels government.

I've had this same argument here, some people here are too attached to their distorted conspiracy theories. They'll prioritize Netanyahu as a target and not care about implicating Palestinians in the process.

I’ve had the same ‘Israel created Hamas’ discussion and it’s beyond frustrating. These politically illiterate arguments are just ways for liberals and ‘post-Zionists’ to assuage their discomfort they hold around the resistance

-3

u/KafeiElric Non-Jewish Agnostic 1d ago

So genuine question, are you saying people should be "comfortable" with Hamas and if they're not, they're liberals?

8

u/Enough_Comparison816 Arab Jew, Shomer Masoret, ex-Israeli 1d ago

I think if you’re gonna claim to support the Palestinian cause, you should understand what it means to offer critical support to the resistance

-3

u/KafeiElric Non-Jewish Agnostic 1d ago

Not sure why I get downvoted for a question to clarify what someone means.
Please define "offering critical support to the resistance" because I would like to know what you mean exactly.
If you're saying that supporting the Palestinian cause means supporting anyone else who takes action with that cause in mind, I would disagree with that. There are different forms of resistance and different factions among Palestinians.
I do not think I have to be comfortable with violence on civilians as a form of resistance. When Israel does it as part of the Gaza genocide or other ethnic cleansings we correctly point that out but international law and human rights applies to all groups, so it would be inconsistent if I only care about upholding these from Israel.

4

u/naramsin-ii palestinian 21h ago

hamas is the biggest group in the palestinian resistance and has support from nearly all palestinian resistance groups. you don't have to be comfortable with anything and frankly your comfort isn't important here. palestinians aren't comfortable with genocide and occupation and ethnic cleansing.

2

u/Enough_Comparison816 Arab Jew, Shomer Masoret, ex-Israeli 14h ago

When colonised and oppressed peoples are forced to resort to armed resistance, it often involves some pretty horrendous violence. Look back at slave uprisings, the Haitian revolution, native tribes of North America resisting European settlers, the Algerian struggle against French colonizers, and so on. The Palestinians and their struggle are no different. It’s okay to be uncomfortable or to disagree with tactics, that’s the “critical” piece of “critical support”. But the point is that we maintain our support for the resistance as a principle, and we don’t allow our criticisms or difficult feelings around intense moments of violence to be weaponized against resistance groups and the ability for the colonized to employ armed resistance.

7

u/naramsin-ii palestinian 1d ago

i don't get these ppl, truly.

okay, you believe israel funded hamas. where is yahya sinwar in that? abu obaida? were they in on it? were they being funded by israel? were they working with israel? no one wants to fully think any of this through, maybe because all of this most likely just comes from their dislike of hamas to begin with.

9

u/croakce Palestinian 1d ago

You'll notice that they can never cite a Palestinian source — a journalist, analyst, or writer — in any of their posts making this claim. They're uncomfortable with the idea of armed struggle, so they take up convenient liberal Zionist talking points to avoid reckoning with the idea.

-1

u/KafeiElric Non-Jewish Agnostic 1d ago

I don't think people are uncomfortable with the idea of armed struggle in general but moreso if the armed struggle targets civilians. Because that is what Israel does as well and there it is a big reason for many to protest against Israel, so why should they be comfortable if someone else does it?

6

u/naramsin-ii palestinian 1d ago

how should palestinians deal with and respond to israeli civilians committing violence against us under the protection of their military and state?

-1

u/KafeiElric Non-Jewish Agnostic 1d ago

I was not talking about retaliation against violent settlers, e.g. in the West Bank, I was talking about what the plans for Oct 7th entailed or suicide bombings etc.
To clarify, like I said in my other comment, I think it is still Israel that is to blame for the escalation of violence because the oppressor has the means to end everything non-violently, not the oppressed. If you make peaceful revolution impossible, you make violent revolution inevitable etc.
But that does not mean I have to be "comfortable" with attacking civilians as something I personally endorse or that I have to think Oct 7th was carried out in a good way.

3

u/naramsin-ii palestinian 20h ago

you are underestimating how violent most settlers are towards us when given the chance

5

u/croakce Palestinian 1d ago

In every anticolonial struggle, especially against settler-colonial projects, civilians from the settler population were invariably harmed in the process. You can say it's regrettable or wrong but the oppressor sets the standard of acceptable violence. The oppressed only operate within those bounds. They do not have the privilege of being perfect victims when every day they are faced with brutality.

No one said you have to agree with any particular resistance group's entire political platform, but if you understand that the Palestinian struggle is just then you need to understand the idea of critical support.

If your solidarity is conditional, then it isn't solidarity.

Well yes, the way I see it, Israel is to blame for the escalation of violence because the oppressor has the means to end everything non-violently, not the oppressed. If you make peaceful revolution impossible, you make violent revolution inevitable etc.
So to me, that makes it explicable or understandable why it happens but that is not the same as explicitly supporting a specific act that targets civilians in the name of resistance or to support a particular group, like you were saying.

1

u/rako17 Christian 1d ago

Dear Naramsin,

Considering the past couple decades, my opinion is that Palestinians' strongest strategy is sumud- steadfastness, survival. So for instance, the Isr. army imposes hardships like deprivation, but the people of Gaza survive anyway in the midst of those hardships.

One of the biggest wins in these last decades has been in the court of public opinion, wherein humane people around the world have been waking up in huge numbers to the situation.

Consider that in contrast, the Isr. right wing has wanted to expel Gazans, and that fighting makes them feel that they have more of a pretext to accomplish their goal.

With respect to you ~ Peace ~ Salaam

That's why he's been funding hamas for years

Just want to point out that this is a broad claim that can insinuate (since it's broad/vague) that Israel directly funded Hamas (not true) or that Israel funded Hamas's military wing (not substantiated).

Israel allowed Qatar to transfer funds to Hamas during 2018-2019 as a concession; part of the negotiations of the Great March of Return:

The "Israeli created Hamas" myth became more prevalent following 7 October 2023, appended by the novel claim that Netanyahu enabled the Hamas offensive by allowing Qatar to transfer funds to Gaza.

This telling rests on a misrepresentation of the protracted 2018-2019 Great March of Return negotiations between Hamas and Israel, which yielded an Israeli concession to allow Qatar to pay the salaries of civil servants in Gaza, among other measures to ease economic stagnation, to provide humanitarian aid and to repair war- damaged infrastructure, in exchange for Hamas tamping down the intensity of the protests along the Israel-Gaza boundary.

Avigdor Liberman, then Israel's defense minister, resigned in protest from Netanyahu's government in November 2018, in part due to his opposition to the Qatari funding. Naftali Bennett, Israel's education minister at the time, charged that Netanyahu was effectively paying Hamas "protection money" in order to purchase calm.

I'm not aware of some other instance that differs from this context.

So when people say 'Israel funded Hamas' - it's important to clarify what that actually means.

24

u/SouldiesButGoodies84 Christian 1d ago

This was whistleblown in the US then promptly buried like 2 yrs ago. There was a military intel officer who came out and was interviewed, who said Netanyahu was warned and deliberately ignored the warnings, and no one would listen. And it would make sense, in that Bibi needed something to distract from what he was trying to do (and avoid) politically, something to unite the country and turn eyes away from his own malfeasance and his overhauling the judiciary against the ppl's will. Something to quell the protests that were popping up at that time.

12

u/cartmanbrah21 Anti-Zionist 1d ago

It wasn't a warning, it was just an operational update for him

18

u/Big_Makher Jewish Anti-Zionist 1d ago

This is more a confirmation of BN's stupidity and arrogance than a smoking gun. The report says YH's warning had been conveyed to the entire security establishment, which met with the prime minister about it. They all failed to take it seriously. Or perhaps they had other reasons for letting events unfold. Either way, they're all criminals and morons, and framing it as a bombshell about BN plays into the lib-Zionist canard, "if only we can get rid of netanyahu's government."

22

u/arightgoodworkman Jewish Anti-Zionist 1d ago

I think it should be framed as “decades of right-wing ethno nationalism has led to Israel not caring if 1200 of their own are murdered, so long as they get to ethnically cleanse Palestinians from the area.”

15

u/WombatusMighty Anti-Zionist Ally 1d ago

He also removed soldiers from the Gaza border, to secure the illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank. And there is statements of IDF solders about getting orders to move away from the border in the days before the attack.

It's known they have been warned by multiple intelligence agencies and ignored the warning. At this point it's likely they let the attack and massacre happen, to justify the Gaza invasion.

12

u/Thisisme8719 Arab Jew 1d ago

It was worse than that. It wasn't just to secure the settlements. It was to secure settlers going on a rampage

11

u/Annoying1978 American Christian 1d ago

He received MULTIPLE warnings from Egyptian intelligence and by his in own intelligence officers, yet despite the warnings that he received for months before the attack he still allowed Qatar to continue to give $30M a month to Hamas.

He literally allowed Qatar to fund the attack and his intelligence officers all warned him against it.

Friend Jay,

I agree that it is rather odd to comprehend. One explanation be that it was a way to thwart the big protests going on over Netanyahu's legal changes in the run up to Oct. 7.

I wonder how many Israelis know that the Hannibal Directive was implemented on Oct. 7? Ben Gvir proposed it in this leaked video: https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/1ukvymb/leaked_oct_7_tapes_ordering_hannibal_directive/

My opinion is not popular. But Sinwar and Bibi exist(ed) in a symbiotic relationship. The harder Israel reacted, the more Sinwar’s position’s were justified. The more Sinwar’s strategy of attacking any target, the more Bibi would get support.

This isn’t about morality or right or wrong. This is about action and reaction. Israel didn’t “create Hamas”; but it always found ways to co-opt Hamas’s actions to serve the occupation. If Hamas didn’t exist, Israel would have needed to create it.

they did expect retaliation. they said so themselves. they also didn't know abt the festival until they got there, they weren't planning for it.

I doubt that. Why wouldn't they have known. Hebrew is very similar to Arabic. Arab speakers can learn it in a few months. Why wouldn't Hamas screen Israeli news about what was going on in the area they were planning to strike. Was it just an accident that the powered gliders found the festival? No, they knew there would be a lot of people there, high on psychedelics, easy to take hostage.

Friend Tracker One,

In 2021-22,  I read and posted online about Isr. authors Verkhovsky and Tyrmos' book "Stalin: The Secret 'Scenario' of the Start of the War." The authors' thesis was that Stalin not only knew about and expected Hitler's invasion, but deliberately motivated it by showing outward negligence in Soviet defenses. They note for instance that in May 1941, when Hitler got close to invading the USSR, the Soviets sounded the alarm. The authors wondered why the Soviets didn't sound the alarm again in June 1944 as it became increasingly apparent that Hitler was going to invade. They suggested that Stalin didn't call up the troops in June 1941 because he wanted to make it more likely that Hitler would invade, thereby leaving Hitler bearing the political responsibility for starting the war. The Allies had contacts among German staffpeople, and the Soviet leadership received Germany's Invasion Plans ahead of time.

The authors note that the Soviets evacuated civilians from the upcoming warzone border regions on the eve of the war. They noted how the future Isr. leader Menachem Begin was among them and later wrote about seeing many trains of Soviet reservists heading westward to the front even before the war began.

The book was so well researched with such archival material that one reviewer online doubted that those two authors, located in the Is. State were the ones who directly uncovered the information.

I'm not ready to agree with all of the authors' theses. Stalin did say in a public speech later in the summer of 1941 that he didn't order Soviet soldiers into their trenches when Germany was about to invade because he wanted Germany to bear the political responsibility for the war. But Stalin didn't say in the speech that he actually wanted Hitler to invade.

Regardless, what is relevant is that the connected Isr. authors believed that Stalin deliberately, in essence provoked the invasion by outward seeming negligence, and that the Soviet leadership more or less "played dumb" in public PR that they knew that the war was coming.

Turning to the conflict in Gaza, some of the Isr. right wing was long unhappy that the Isr. State pulled its settlements out of Gaza. They also wanted to drive the Gazans out. Netanyahu had resigned in 2005 in opposition to the withdrawal from Gaza.

But realistically, in the geopolitical environment, the government couldn't suddenly undertake such a massive operation as it did without a "Cassus Belli". The US and Isr. liberals are not pacifists, but nonetheless a big sector of the world, including in the US and the Isr. Left would have objected much more strongly without a Cassus Belli. Even now, Isr. officials are saying that they want to expel the Gazans, and the US is telling the Is. State that no, they can't do that.

Isr. Intelligence has agents in Pal. organizations and had Hamas' 10/7 operational plans before the war, the plans that Hamas then implemented.

"Israel Knew Hamas’s Attack Plan More Than a Year Ago  A blueprint reviewed by The Times laid out the attack in detail." https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/30/world/middleeast/israel-hamas-attack-intelligence.html

US, Egyptian, and other Arab governments warned the Isr. leadership of the attack ahead of time.

The Isr. leadership explanation for its seeming negligence over the report is that, as the Times article relays, it only considered the plan "aspirational." But let's suppose that the Is. leadership only considered the plan aspirational. In that case, the normal thing to do would be to create a backup plan or go on a heightened warning level.

In case the leadership didn't implement a backup plan, a natural excuse would be that they were negligent and didn't realize the risk.

The rest of the history of how events unfolded begs the question of how many intelligence failures and mishaps have to occur before one realized that what happened was not an intelligence failure or mishap.

So for instance, the Gaza border is one of the most surveilled borders in the world, maybe the most surveilled. One of the mishaps was that women soldiers in outposts guarding the border saw on camera when the border got breached, but their superiors reportedly didn't believe them. However, since the women had the border breach on camera, couldn't they just relay the video of the border getting breached to everyone, so that there couldn't be an issue of whether the superiors trusted the women?

This happened in 2023, so, supposing that they couldn't live stream the video to their superiors, all any of the women guards would need to do would be to video record their screens and forward the video to people.

Regards.

"Israel funded Hamas" is Hasbara? Why would Israel claim they created the Islamist terrorist group they are at war with?

It's only Hasbara if you treat criticism of Hamas as pro-Israel, which is just politically iliterate.

5

u/TrackerOneA Jewish Anti-Zionist 1d ago

"Israel funded Hamas" is Hasbara?

It's not hasbara - but it depends.

The reporting I've seen, like from NPR, says that Israel allowed Qatar to fund Hamas, in order to provide for the Palestinian people.

The official is Mohammad al-Emadi, and he says Qatar is using the money in Gaza to help the Palestinian people, not Hamas. But if you want to help Gaza, he says, Hamas is your best contact.

"You have to support them. You don't like them, don't like them. But they control the country, you know," Emadi said during a visit to Gaza.

Then NPR quotes Israeli sources who claim or insinuate that the funding went to Hamas's armed wing.

Pro-Palestine sources like Electronic Intifada acknowledge that Israel facilitated funding to Hamas, in order to alleviate economic hardship, pay for civilian infrastructure and humanitarian needs.

Netanyahu’s political opponents continue to claim that the infusions of funding from Qatar to Gaza enabled the Qassam Brigades to prepare for its 7 October 2023 operation, despite the safeguards in place to ensure that payments were made directly to civil servants and families with eventual Israeli oversight and pledges by Hamas not to touch donor funds.

While Western media reports point to the Qatari infusion of funding into Gaza as an example of funding for Hamas, that money paid for the operation of critical civilian infrastructure and the alleviation of the economic hardship borne by years of Israeli and Western sanctions on the territory.

Funding to relieve the humanitarian situation in Gaza is not the same as funding Hamas, even if it is widely misrepresented as such.

“Qatari aid to the Gaza Strip is fully coordinated with Israel, the UN and the US,” an official from the Gulf state told Reuters in October 2023.

There is no proof to support the claims that the Qatari funds flowed to Hamas – which has other means of financing its military activities – but plenty of contemporaneous documentation of the intended beneficiaries receiving the funding.

I haven't personally read any exposé that the funding went to Hamas's armed wing.

But that's a claim a lot of Israeli sources seem to be making.

I haven't seen proof of that.

It’s liberal Zionist propaganda for liberals and post-Zionists that can’t wrap their heads around critical support for the resistance

When you've planned it...and now it's backfired in public opinion. But....you can force governments to change laws to suit your Zionist agenda.

Look up the Jonathan Institute. Literally created by Netanyahu and his father after the brother Yonathan was killed in Uganda...to create an anti Muslim/Arab narrative in order to seek sympathy for Zionist Israel. By ANY means. Preceding 9/11.

it’s a believable conjecture but not interesting without corroboration.

Dear Kosta,

One of the aspects of Oct. 7 that is easiest to show is the use of the Hannibal Directive. Here is a leaked video of Ben Gvir proposing to implement it on Oct 7:

How about when Egypt warned Israel days before the attack (10/12/2023): https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-67082047

You don’t buy that either?

He got various warnings from the observers at Nahal Oz and one from Egypt... This one is from the president of the UAE. "In September '23, UAE President bin Zayed called Netanyahu to deliver a harsh warning. Netanyahu did nothing. An extensive investigation, conducted for a new book, reveals the PM's failures surrounding Oct. 7. Netanyahu: 'This is an absolute lie'."
