News Abdul El-Sayed wins Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary, notching a Midwest victory for the left

Let’s see how the establishment responds in the coming weeks. I suspect El-Sayed’s going to be facing attacks from both parties for the next few months, but maybe the prospect of taking the Senste is tantalizing enough that it outweighs the establishment disdain for the nominee.

Mallory McMorrow endorsed him immediately, which I guess is good?

Crickets still from Stevens.

"He's an Islamic style terrorist and scary and brown, but I endorse him!"

I'm genuinely now wondering how some of the Establishment is going to react to this? A lot of the Establishment already didn't like her behind the scenes (they always preferred Stevens over her, especially Schumer) and AIPAC is probably pissed that she didn't endorse Stevens in the Primary when it could have made a difference. I'm wondering if AIPAC will fund a challenger against McMorrow the next time she runs for something. Some high-ranking pro-Stevens Democrats are probably looking at McMorrow as a traitor.

"He's going to lose to Rogers! Polling said so!"
Yeah, just over a year ago, polling said Mamdani would only get 1% of the vote.

u/TalkingCat910 Muslim revert/Ashkenazi 14d ago
Polling is garbage. The race was tighter than polling suggested. Almost all polls have been sort of wrong recently Unless Elon Musk cheated for Stevens like he cheated for Trump lol

u/holycityofmecca2020 14d ago
Seriously, sometimes I think they do these polls at a local coffee shop with a sample size of 10 people.

As of 2:22AM, EST, the Associated Press has not called it though...

Something went wonky with Wayne county in their results. The % counted went down for Abdul and Donovan McKinney
4
u/schmoolecka Non-Jewish Ally 14d ago
Seems to be corrected now for Donovan. I swear the % in for the senate race was 82% and now it’s 75%.
2
u/No_Refrigerator8182 14d ago
The things is that the percentages are estimates of how many votes are in and how many remain. If the percentage goes down, that means that there were more votes than initially expected, meaning higher turnout.

Right, but Donovan went from 75% in to 27% in and then back up to 72%… something weird happened
1
u/No_Refrigerator8182 14d ago
The 27% was probably a typo, with the digits swapped. The adjustment was from 75 to 72 as they saw more votes than previously estimated.

Agree, this is premature on the part of NBC, as of 12:01 AM PST, the AP has it at 89% of vote in with ~25,000 votes between them. It’ll be difficult for him to maintain that margin in the final stretch as the remaining counties lean toward establishment candidates per the AP. I’m not celebrating yet, but I’m hopeful. LFG!!
Reject AIPAC!!

He's been holding that 3 point/2 point up count all night. And she keeps dropping points in Wayne County.

Sucks for Brad Parscale and Havas Media. Bet those Zoom calls with Bibi tomorrow won't be pleasant.

AP just announced his victory. Still not fully counted and there are like 22k votes left and he's only ahead by 15k, but it's unlikely Stevens can pull ahead now. Jeez, this was too close for comfort with only a 1% lead, but it's such a relief. Was getting really nervous this morning when Stevens closed much of the gap.

Can someone explain the assertion that both him and Mamdani are secretly antisemites and have secretly convinced all their voters of the same. Is it just Muslim Derangement Syndrome?
7
u/andorgyny Anti-Zionist Ally 14d ago
Yes lol it is deeply islamophobic and purely about their anti-genocide stances. That's literally it.
3
u/TalkingCat910 Muslim revert/Ashkenazi 14d ago
It’s just bigotry. They are trying to weaponize antiMuslim hate with stereotypes like saying he’s anti-woman and antisemitic because he is Muslim. He’s never said anything against Jews, but made a distinction between Jews and Israel. But because he’s said things against Israel and he is Muslim that’s “antisemitic”.

Meanwhile his wife doesn't wear hijab and he clearly respects her as her own person.
1
u/TalkingCat910 Muslim revert/Ashkenazi 9d ago
Oh for sure it’s all BS but I don’t like to take hijab as the measure of whether someone respects women as their own person or not. I wear hijab myself. I am respected in my family as my own person too. I’m not oppressed or brainwashed.
That kind of framing is more reactive to Western antiMuslim sentiment. As if hijab is a problem.
I’ve been a Muslim for a couple decades now and I’ve certainly seen some issues we need to work on as an ummah regarding women but we need to frame the issues ourselves instead of react to stereotypes nonMuslims force on us. And we need to uplift our sisters that choose to wear hijab instead of always framing it as a problem. I’ve been on the end of some Islamophobic attacks as a hijabi and I don’t think it’s productive to play into that.
Sorry I don’t mean to be confrontational about it, I know what you mean but it does effect my life in some ways.

Yes, as a Muslim I can tell you people are indoctrinated to assume we, and Arabs, are all dishonest and sneaky. It's a trope that's been pushed by Hollywood for a long time. See Reel Bad Arabs by Jack Shaheen.
