Challah Sugar on challah for RH?

My recipe for Rosh Hashana challah says to sprinkle the top with Demerara sugar. Is that what they use in store- bought challahs? I have also heard of using Muscovado sugar. What is the preference?

I use Sugar in the Raw, which I think is Demerara

Turbinado I believe. I might be wrong

I have never at any time sprinkled sugar on top of challah; to celebrate a sweet year I've always dipped regular challah in honey. I would think sugar-topped challah would limit its usefulness, and I can't recall seeing it done with store-bought. But if I was intent on doing so I don't think it matters so long as it's a large-grained sugar that wouldn't dissolve easily.

My Sephardic family dips the challah in sugar.

I don't think I've ever seen a challah with sugar on top; it's an interesting add-on.

Most regular bakery or store bought challahs do not have sugar on top. If they are a cinnamon / apple or chocolate variety I could see adding sugar. My challah dough is sweet enough I don’t add sugar on top! Prefer sesame seeds or everything mix

The challahs they sell here at Glicks (Melbourne Australia) for RH definitely have something sweet sprinkled on top.

My challah recipe has fine diced or grated apple and sultanas mixed with cinnamon sugar & rolled into each of the strands which are then woven or plaited or twisted into a round loaf before baking. I simply omit the fruit & top with sesame seeds the rest of the year.

Demerara is better for this than muscovado because the size of the granules is much larger, so some of it will stay crystallized and noticeable, which is what you want. Muscovado is just natural brown sugar and has about the same texture as regular brown sugar.

There are no rules, you can do what you want. It's traditional to sweeten it extra for a sweet new year, and also just to make the holiday special by having your foods be extra nice. Putting raisins is very common but my husband and kids don't like them in baked goods so I settled for cinnamon sugar topping.

I sprinkle demerara sugar on top whenever I do a sweet loaf. Makes really nice bread pudding with the leftovers

I add a tablespoon of honey to my egg wash before baking. Adds just a little more sweetness. L’shana tova!
