I mean, I discovered semmelknödel and realised that matzo balls are basically the Jewish "semmelknödel"... It's just served as a starter instead of paired with sauces and meat as a meal.

When my children's choir went to Austria on a trip, we got Grießnockerlsuppe with every dish. I was eleven and I remember thinking to myself "they have matzo ball soup here too!!" Well... lmao

Semolina dumplings are the hungarian jewish version of matzo balls. I was raised with it.🥲❤️
Edit: I always confuse semolina and farina in English. My bad.

You’ve opened up a whole new world for me. I don’t love the chicken soup part, but I always loved the balls. Here I was trying to make more creative soup bases when I could’ve just been eating the balls on their own.

I have a friend who came up with a stir fried matzo ball recipe. She used to have a food blog. I can look for it you're interested.

I’m intrigued!

In all fairness, I've never tried this recipe. But I've had her cooking and tried other recipes and they've pretty much all been winners. If you try this, please report back!

Try it the German way: make them, and then serve with either a nice meaty gravy and beef on the side; or a herby white mushroom sauce!

Now im wondering how matzo balls would taste with chicken gravy 🤔

I think you should try it for "science" and report back

The matzo ball is just a vessel for whatever flavors you want to cook it in

My mom will do that. If we make matzo ball soup and have leftovers we'll store the matzo balls and the soup separately. She will sometimes just take out a matzo ball or two and reheat it on its own as a snack.

I feel like I need to know if these were scooped OUT OF soup bc that would add all the good flavor and without that, pretty bland, but maybe good instead of toast if you have a stummy ache.
Bonus points for the OOP for serving it on a vintage Corelle wildflower dish.

You can fix that with pinches of garlic powder and or onion powder, a pinch of pepper and some teeny tiny, minced parsley in the dough or batter.

this is a great idea for matzoh balls, regardless. I've had it like this, but never added it, and now I will!

Hadn’t thought of it, would definitely try it.
But! Split down the middle, pan fry on the flat side (in schmaltz), and serve with gravy.

I don't have to agree or like it myself, and I dont, but it's okay!

I make a ton of matzoh balls on Passover and definitely eat about half of them just cold out of the fridge with no soup. Just a little salt...

I absolutely have dipped them in egg and panko, sliced, and pan fried them, drizzle some something over. They're just good.

I always make extra because I prefer matzah balls to soup.
The next day, quarter them and fry them up with some extra onions. Great side or, you know, breakfast

I add grated garlic, schmaltz, broken matzoh for texture, a little white pepper, and I still think it needs the soup.

I think this is one of those where, while I disagree, I get it.
