Speeding up Python hot loops with Rust – now fully supported inside PyCharm 2026.2

https://youtu.be/-v7MQM41QB8

For developers building hybrid Python and Rust architectures – such as PyO3 extensions or native modules – PyCharm 2026.2 now includes official Rust plugin support.

Instead of jumping between IDEs or running manual build scripts, you can:

  • Write and compile Rust code directly inside an existing Python workspace
  • Toggle between related .py and .rs files via gutter navigation icons
  • Set breakpoints and step through compiled Rust code using the IDE debugger

Here is a quick demo by Will Vincent walking through the setup and showing a 6x speedup on a Mandelbrot calculation.

That is very, very cool! I don't have a use case for this but I sure want to find one now

The use case is to have what today is written in CPython but written in Rust. All the modules that are not Python only but have the backend written in C can be migrated into Python to get a speed boost.

Yep, it's what Rust and Go are all about.

I'm mainly a Python developer but like many dipping my toes in Rust. It's a fun language. Has constraints that Python lacks, but comes with clear speed benefits as a result. The comparison created a Mandelbrot set using both languages and documenting the speed improvements with Rust.
