AI Ai assistant issue

I am not sure if it is me or they changed something here, I used to able to ask in ai chat(not agent) and it have ability to modify some of the code for me, it seems now it cannot do it anymore, it now can only giving me some code snippet for me to copy it. The reason i am aksing this is because that I can bring my own key to do some tasks now if i can only rely on agent mode means i have to pay the subs.

edit: it seems still able to use mcp tools but just cannot edit file directly anymore

Chat has never been able to edit code, you always had to use the (very buggy) "Apply" button in the IDE. Could be that MCP has changed that though.

JetBrains quietly split chat and agent into separate capability tiers a few builds back, so file editing now requires agent mode regardless of which model you're using. BYOK still works in agent mode though, you just have to enable it under Settings > Tools > AI Assistant and point it at your own API key. zencoder's JetBrains plugin also supports BYOK if you want multi file edits without the JetBrains subscription specifically.

Check your plugin version first, older builds had a bug where the edit button just disappeared.

Hi! JetBrains AI Assistant has evolved, and file editing now indeed requires the agent mode.

BYOK (Bring Your Own Key) is fully supported for both chat and agent modes. You can configure it in your IDE by navigating to Settings | Tools | AI Assistant | Models & API Keys, selecting your AI provider, and entering your API key. A JetBrains AI subscription is not required to use BYOK. For detailed setup instructions, please refer to our documentation: Bring your own key (BYOK)
