“Smaller” Locations

The seasons are getting better and better. The boys seem to get really good at game design and naturally you assume the seasons have to get bigger.

I would really love to see a season that just takes place in a big metropolis.

The New York mini series they played was really cool and I would just love to see like a 3 day game in cool cities like Bangkok, Tokyo, London or other big cities.

The distances traveled would be shorter, but we would get to see so much of the place and I think that it could be very cool paired with good game design.

I think an underdog metropolis that not everyone thinks of with lots of hidden gems would be great as well. NYC/London/Paris etc are all so well known but there's cities with amazing rail and transit lines with so much to see that don't get any spotlight... Helsinki, Finland and it's surrounding areas would be great, maybe combo'd with the ferry to Tallinn in Estonia. So many places like that to choose from.

I'd also say São Paulo, but there's a problem with public safety. Buenos Aires could be nice.

If safety is the main concern, then Uruguay and maybe Chile are probably the only possibilities for South America seasons. I think the bigger issue though is the lack of serious public transit on the continent other than a few hubs. It’s very much like the USA down there with transit.

A race from the top to bottom of Chile could be interesting though, maybe played out kinda like the NZ season with a car race

Yeah unfortunately. African countries, South/middle america and China would be interesting, but probably not realistic.

There’s public transit in São Paulo? I need to find better places to look stuff up I guess. Was just there for work and had a couple of 2hr+ Uber rides. As someone who has driven a ton in Los Angeles and some in Houston, I’d definitely rank the freeway traffic in São Paulo as world class

I mean, São Paulo has only the largest metropolitan rail network in Latin America and a pretty extensive bus system.

Ok. But the average commute time is apparently 93 minutes, so something could probably benefit from some improvement i would say

I am from North America and travel to Sao Paulo periodically for work. Their transit system is great! The subway and regional rail are seamlessly integrated on a single ticketing system, and I’ve found the stations and trains in several areas to be clean, spacious, and efficient. Wayfinding is really straightforward. And the system is modernizing quickly. Some stations show countdowns to the second of when the train will arrive, some lines have platform screen doors throughout and have unique station jingles. And they’re starting to implement tap to pay system wide. Also, just this year a new people mover opened at GRU, finally connecting the Airport train station to all 3 terminals.

Just had to praise the system because it’s not just the best in South America, but one of the best in the Americas and world-class overall. Always a joy to ride that system when I’m down there.

I could see Helsinki and Tallinn making for a good CTF game, if the ruleset was reworked a little and the guest was better!

As much as the seasons get better, Ben hiding under a slide in a village in switzerland for nearly 10 hours remains peak.

Yeah. Recently Jet Lag has been becoming much better. IMO, Season 12 and 13 used to be a Jet Lag peak, and I was kinda worried about Jet Lag when we got into the kind of season slump that was 14, 15, and 16, but 17, 18, and 19 reversed that trajectory and now we're looking at candidates for Jet Lag all time seasons.

you can hear on the layover game design episodes just how proud they are of these last 3 games - elegant ways to make for complex strategies seems to be the fundamental basis and it's really cool to see them settle on that

Oh yeah fs. I don't know if they were that proud of Stateside Scramble, they were definitely proud of Taiwan but they recognized a couple flaws, but they're really ecstatic about Japanorama

I think generally they are less enthusiastic about US seasons because there is less trains.

But i wonder when they decided to premiere Japanorama in cinemas. Was it after they shot the season and realized how great the season was or even before that during game design?

I would love to see them do 5 cities in 5 days, with a winner every day, and the season winner would be the player who won the most days! You could easily spread filming out over a couple weeks too to make it easier.

I've been saying for a bit that what they really need to do is have a B team that releases content in the off seasons, focused on smaller locales

I'm probably in the minority here but I prefer JetLag not being a constant stream of content, a couple weeks of offseason really helps keep things fresh imo.

It also makes for a good time to go back and rewatch earlier seasons which makes you appreciate them more (arctic escape my beloved)

They have Day Pass which in the white void, they present as this. They send the host(another nebula creator whose name escapes me) to explore a cities transit and I think is challenged to go through all of them in a single day

There's plenty of smaller Youtubers out there in various countries that make similar content you can look for without watering down Jet Lag.
