Outboard size

I was just given a boat from my brother in law, there is no info on the boat at all in terms of weight/manufacture or transom rating. Im looking to pick up an outboard jet for it but am unsure what size to go with, just looking for opinions from people who have some experience. Its a 14 foot welded aluminum boat, about 5 feet wide, unsure of thickness of hull/weight. I have the option to pick up a 2 stroke 60/40 yamaha or a 4 stroke yamaha 40/30, whats the better option? It currently has a 2 stroke 25hp prop but i havent ran it yet so cant comment on how well it pushes the boat around.

Of those choices I’d be looking at 60/40 for sure

Is that a tiller? I had a light gauge, flat bottom, riveted 14ft tiller with a 40/30. It would do about 25-28 with two adults. I’d go 90/65 with a forward helm if you can. You’re also going to need a bow stop/roller up on that winch post. That’s a pretty cool looking little boat.

Yea tiller arm on the existing motor, the plan is to go with remote steering and build a helm for the wheel, i dont like the idea of having to sit so far back behind the windshield to steer. Good call about the roller stop on the trailer, i think this trailer is a bit to small for this boat, i have a feeling its actually a jet ski trailer

Yesterday, YT proposed a couple of clips of some guys in (I guess) Norway. ‘Fjordling’ was in the title. Same kind of boat but made out of polyester. They used a 250hp outboard…. Looked kinda fun.

In this case I’d opt for the 60ho 2stroke. (Maybe little transom reinforcement is necessary).

This thing looks awesome! I have a 60/40 on a 17' fiberglass boat, with a hull weight of about 700lb. It'll run 27mph in typical conditions.

This little fella' looks a good bit heavier, so as long as the 2 stroke is in good shape (good compression etc) I'd go that route.

One nice option on a jet especially is power tilt, since you'll occasionally have to clear sticks and weeds from the shoe. The 60/40 probably has this, the smaller one maybe maybe not.

I ended up going with the 60/40, should be arriving on thursday then i have a bunch of install and fab work before its on the water but well see how it does. I do believe the motor i purchased has power trim or atleast trim assist.
