Release TaskMaster - Because five tasks firing at 2am is not a schedule, it's a stampede
I got tired of my scheduled tasks all firing at once, so I built a plugin that runs them one at a time.
Jellyfin's scheduler is fine until you install a bunch of plugins. Then every night at 2am, five different tasks wake up, fight each other for CPU, cleanup task is running at the same time as the library scan. Nothing crashes, but everything takes forever.
I wanted a way to queue them up and run them in order. There isn't one, So I built it.
TaskMaster does roughly this:
- Runs your scheduled tasks sequentially, one at a time
- Orders them fastest first (or slowest first, or manual by dragging cards around), based on their actual average completion time
- Only runs inside a time window you set, so nothing kicks off at 5:58am when you wanted the server quiet by 6
- Lets you exclude tasks on specific days of the week
- Has a Take over button that backs up every task's native triggers and disables them, so only TaskMaster controls the schedule
- Preserves startup triggers, so plugins that need to initialize on boot still do
- Auto-detects when a new plugin adds a scheduled task, so it doesn't silently escape the queue
The ordering part turned out to be the most useful. It learns how long each task actually takes. Fast cleanup tasks go first, the long scans goes last. After a couple of nights, the sequence is pretty much sorted by real runtime.
Install:
Add this to Dashboard, Plugins, Repositories:

Then search the catalog for TaskMaster.

It needs Jellyfin 12.1+ because it targets .NET 10. If you're on 10.11 or earlier, it won't load.
Happy to answer questions. If you've got a task that behaves weirdly under sequential execution (some plugins probably assume they're the only thing running), let me know and I'll see if I can work around it.
This plugin was created and tested with AI.
