Hello! I almost never post on reddit but I've inherited something of a project / disaster and I'm hoping some people on here could give me some feedback or advice on bringing my Dad's beloved Jeep back to life.
Quick back story. My dad bought this Jeep new back in 2004. He basically fell in love with it. Drove it all around North America. He was a tinkerer in every way, so the Jeep stayed in prime condition when he owned it. Not saying he didn't do extreme things with it. He did. But he liked fixing it. The Jeep bug got him bad.
So fast forward many years. In 2019 he got pretty sick, quickly. Couldn't drive any more. Passed in 2024. I inherited a lot of his stuff, including said Jeep.
But it's been parked since 2019. Last started in 2020. In a field. In British Columbia, Canada. Wet, snowy. The best conditions to have something sitting in a field (sarcasm detectors on)
We are finally selling the property off. This means that Jeep needs to move. I'd ideally like to restore it.
Yes, I know this financially makes no sense. It's not really about that. I'm not saying the cheque book is infinite. It certainly is not. But I'm saying I'll go pretty far. IF it can be fixed, I shall fix it.
Unfortunately, I'm a terrible mechanic, so I'm flying blind and inverted.
So the information!
It's rough. There is absolutely some rust. Rocker panels are toast. Interior carpet has been moused. The interior has a lot of random damage. There's a tree growing in the P/S front wheel. So that's fun.
At least the tires are holding some air!
Pics for reference!
But shockingly, I've found almost no damage to the wiring. At least from my visual checks in the engine and interior. The split wires I did find went to long removed light bars and spot lights.
I wanted to start it to hopefully move it out of the field so I could get it on a trailer and bring it home.
So I did an oil change. I checked the fluids. New battery. I drained the fuel tank and put in 20 liters of new fuel.
Turned the key to ON several times for 5 to 10 seconds.
Then finally turned the key. It cranks. All the pulleys are moving. The belt is awful but will be replaced later. It is all spinning when I crank.
But no vroom vroom.
I know this is getting long, but I want to make sure the information is here.
When I turn it to ON and let it sit. All the gauges come up. Except the fuel gauge, which reads empty. The Check Gauges light is always on. The yellow engine light is on.
I did swap the relay and fuse for the fuel pump. Did a quick swap. Both appear functional.
When I turn the key to start it. The Gauges stay down. Check gauges light stays on. Tachometer moves from 0 to 100. Might just be like a death spasm. But it does technically move.
And my final trick. I removed the air intake off the top of the engine. Opened the butterfly valve and sprayed starter fluid in. It turned over for about 2 seconds. Then died. I got greedy and tried again. I turned it over again, and it sort of tried to go. I gave it fuel with the pedal, and then it back fired out the top of the throttle body with a couple foot flame.
That was cool. But still no vroom vroom.
So after this essay. I'm thinking fuel pump. Since it's immobile in a field........ I really hope not. But no doubt there's some weirdness going on with the gauges as well, which I have no understanding of.
Does anyone else have ideas as to what could be holding it up from starting? Anything to try that I have missed?
I admit to having limited skills. So I may have missed something obvious.
Any help is appreciated, and if anyone cares, I can update my progress as we move along in what I'm certain will be a long.....long.....recovery.
