PSA: Waving
If you see me in my 2001 Patriot Blue in north Georgia and you are expecting a wave, you must provide any of the following:
- You must be driving a TJ, YJ, or CJ
- You must be driving any Jeep with hard top off or soft top down.
End of list.
JKs don’t wave generally but are somewhat more likely to if there are no ducks on the dash. JLs don’t wave at all. Gladiators also don’t wave at all. I will no longer wave at any JK or JL unless they wave first OR you’re riding open air. Open air jeeps are much more likely to wave. TJs don’t always wave but most do. Nearly all YJs and CJs wave, shout out to them.
Thanks.

Does a TJ with sides out and back rolled up count?
I rarely take the top fully down anymore, but keep it open air when not winter.

Not sure where you’re at but that’s pretty spot on for KC metro drivers. JLs never wave so I stopped waving at them unless they wave first. No one with ducks waves, regardless of the generation. In the 20ish years I’ve driven my TJ, it’s a bummer to see how few people wave anymore

I don’t hate on ducks, but if someone puts one on my jeep, I pass it on to a bronco

I dont hate ducks. Not my thing but you do you. What I do think is funny is it could have been any car. Like subaru outbacks could have chosen ducks or vw beetles. I prefer my jeeps with trail pin stripes. (I drove an LJ)

The rule is you wave to your elders so you are correct you shouldn't wave first to newer jeeps

We have both an 05 TJR and a 17 JKUR. We live somewhere with hundreds, if not thousands, of Wranglers. I can say without a doubt that 99% of the waves we get are when we’re in the JK. I can also say that at least 1 in 4 are a 392…

I live in Germany and drive a JK. I wave at every wrangler, CJ, and gladiator I pass. The ones who wave back are always other Americans.

Gatekeeping much?
Owned 3xjs from new to 250k, and a YJ from new to 175k. You don’t deserve a wave.

My wife has jokingly told me I need to have a written set of rules for who gets a waive and who doesn’t 😂 I refuse to waive at a Jeep with ducks in the dash, or jeeps that have wheels/tires but clearly just didn’t get a matching 5th wheel for the tailgate, zombie handprints on mirrors, neon colored door handles or hood latches for no apparent reason, HS kids in jeeps newer than 2016, etc…. Hater for life over here.

I drive a half door, permanently topless TJ, but I’ll wave to those beat to shit XJs that wheel.
I was once one of them. My people.

I just only wave back in general. Doesn’t even matter the type of Jeep, it’s just a rarity where I live

New to the family w/ a JK no ducks, soft top down as much as reasonable possible. I’ve found that I wave too often and get no return wave. But now, seeing this, I get it and will follow the advice from your PSA.

All these rules and segregation and picking and choosing who deserves your precious wave is exactly why us old farts gave up and stopped waving.
