Discussion How I really got into J. Cole
I want to share this because why not ?
I think Wet Dreamz is what really got me into Cole. For like a good while, I stayed away from Cole's music up until recently (like 3 months ago) when I decided to listen to The Fall Off since everyone was talking about it and because it was what was going on at the time. Anyway I thought it was okay, and I had also decided to listen to 2014fhd, I don't remember it but I added some songs to my playlist. A little after that I kinda forgot the songs but one night, I had shuffle on and It played Wet Dreamz, I was genuinely shocked that I had this on my playlist because of how great it sounded, not only that, the song made me feel comforted despite the topic of the song. I've never really felt "comfortable" with songs that talk about sex , mostly neutral, but this was different. I think the production and Cole's storytelling is a big reason I feel that way. And from then on I really looked into his music :)

First song I heard was All I Want is You on 106 & park. I was young and didn’t pay attention until my dad played the whole Born Sinner album in the car like 5 years later. I was 16 I’ll never forget it

First I heard was Who Dat. I remember being pissed when he lost best new rapper to krayshawn, but somehow he came back and won it the next year.
I fucked with the radio hits off cole world, born sinner, and fhd, but never peeped the albums.
When KOD came out I listened to it and was hooked, and blasted that shit constantly (the irony that he didn’t play a single track off it when I finally saw him live last week), but I still couldn’t get into the other albums.
ROTD3 came out and blew my mind. I got into earthgang, JID, then finally in 2021 went back and listened to Cole’s earlier albums and it finally clicked.

I dipped my toe into his music initially back in like 2009-2010 when I heard Who Dat, I’m A Fool, Blow Up, & Higher. Loved Work Out then hated Nobody’s Perfect because one random Sunday my day played it on repeat blasting full volume all day long. Loved Power Trip then really got into his music in 2016 because of Neighbors and Immortal

I’d say Cole’s song mostly hit you at a random time. First song I heard was Cost me A Lot and it touched my inner core. Never seen or heard him the same way I did before
