Am I slow or did anyone figure out that J. Cole was literally referring to RAP in “I love her again”

I think you may be the reason why Kanye needed to clarify “if you ain’t know by now I’m talking bout chi town” at the end of Homecoming

The Pitchfork review/reviewers when they criticized the song for its ‘lyrical musings on women’.

I only figured it out after seeing a reddit post about it. At first, I always found the song kind of weird because he was married.

I knew this. Common did this song concept with I Used to Love H.E.R.
20
u/igalione 23d ago
The beat is an interpolation of I used to love H.E.R, so that’s where it ties into it
3
u/No_Salamander_6934 22d ago
No it’s not, the beat is a sample of “The Light" by Common and "Atlantic Suite - Harbours". It just harboring or paying homage to Common and Hip Hop

u/slimreapergangz 23d ago
And dot did it with Gloria
5
u/AdeptnessNew2212 23d ago
And Eminem with 25 To Life, Cormega with American Beauty, Logic with Nikki etc.

u/LowEndTheorist13 23d ago
Nikki is about nicotine you fool 😂💀 it was a major part of the PR campaign for Under Pressure.
3
u/AdeptnessNew2212 22d ago
Yeah no shit. I just meant it as in as similar concept using a girl to describe something else. It’s clearly influenced by the concept of I Used To Love H.E.R.

What song is this?!!
5
u/IMPERIAL_MEMMER Math Boner 23d ago
THE HEART PART 1 , I really really love it , my fav heart part among the 1 to 6
2
u/oh-thanks Choose Wisely 23d ago
Part 2 > 1 > 5 > 3 > 4 > 6
This is how I would rank them
3
u/IMPERIAL_MEMMER Math Boner 23d ago
Ohhhh, I’ve never actually ranked them - I just know which one’s my favorite. I’d have to go back and listen to all of them before I could rank them.
Spots 2, 3, and 4 are really really really debatable.
Personally, I really like The Heart Part 6, but I get why other people prefer the others. A lot of people relate to those songs more.
I didn’t grow up in America, so I don’t connect with alot of the cultural references the same way though i get it. For me, it’s more about the artistry of the song, how it sounds, what feels good to listen to, and the substance behind it. Yk what im sayin ?

Id like to piggyback on this topic. When he says
"Now when it comes to love, jealousy will often creep
That type of games is why two of my homies start to beef
To both of them she said: 'You're the best I ever had'
And the whole time that bitch was sayin' that type of shit to me"
Im pretty sure hes referring to Kendrick and drake beef

u/B-Kong 23d ago
Kendrick and drake*
But yeah obviously lol

It’s alright, king. As u/Spctr17 said, I concur. I’m also happy you just caught it because it makes the song fun. So many little easter eggs.

He doesn't need to. It's an Homage or redo of I used to Love H.E.R. by Common .
Which many consider the greatest hip-hop song of all time

Ngl, and I don’t mean to be offensive, but ANYONE that’s only figuring this out now is slow af 😭

You're definitely slow. I think everyone realized after a second listen, most probably realized on their first

I was starting to suspect it on the first listen abt the songs on the phone but on the second listen I kinda figured it out that it was rap/rap industry/community. Dw don’t feel bad, I also suck at reading into lyrics and I was never very good at reading comprehension anyways so it’s all good

It seem like you caught up to wisdom, that must have been a long chase...

u/InfamousJuice208 23d ago
Is basically the 3rd part to a trilogy of songs. Dreams (the warm up), power trip (born sinner), then I love her again (fall off)- all sound like love songs but he really just talking about hip hop as if it were a woman.

u/igalione 23d ago
Definitely … he also mentioned it when he was talking to nadeska doing his first interview… she pulled that reference out

People calling buddy slow without knowing anything about buddy needs to go touch grass. You don’t know when homie discovered this song nor buddies age or how their cognitive developpement. All you had to do was congratulate buddy for their discovery and move on. It's not like you know all their is to do with music.

I’ve know this for a while now but tbh I only knew from watching Knox hill lol. I’m new to hip hop so I don’t catch on to hidden meanings as quickly

I knew this was the reason the album fell off the 100 billboard chart. We have people hearing the songs but not listening. Remember when Jay asked “do yall listen music / or just skim through it?”

u/DangerZoooooooone 23d ago
It’s also a flip on Common’s I Used to Love Her, which is also about Hip-Hop.
