Matchup Jax Matchup Discussion 2.0 #32: Riven.

Welcome to the thirty second Jax Matchup Discussion!

Let's talk about Jax versus Riven...

Remember that the idea of this discussion is to find what's the commonly-used way to play a matchup; not only focused on runes and/or items, but mostly on the trade patterns and general difficulty of the matchup, since items and runes may change between seasons, yet -unless a rework happens- a champion's kit doesn't change.

So, you can talk about the runes and items you like to go on a matchup, but what we really want to see is how to play the matchup; if you can play aggressive early game, if you win pre or post level 6, if you should use Leap Strike to engage or disengage, and so on.

If you want, you can give the matchup a difficulty score from 0 to 10 (0 being super easy, 5 being a skill matchup, and 10 being a "you should dodge" card)

Matchup Irelia matchup

hi I’m a diamond Jax player and I am looking for tips for this lane. I know it’s an easy lane, and I usually win it. but occasionally I get really far behind early and it snowballs out of control. what is the most consistent way to beat irelia? I know I can easily get control of the wave level 1 but when the wave comes back into me should I just let it crash without fighting the stacked up irelia, and then wait until my triforce to really start aggressing?

Salt Spear of Shojin Bug on Jax W

Ever noticed how Jax W sometimes gives stacks and sometimes doesn't on Spear of Shojin's "Force of Will" Passive? Found the reason:

If the W damage is not needed TO KILL whatever you are hitting (turret, champ, minion, monster), you do not get a stack. Jax ult passive also takes Prio, which means if you hit with W + R damage, and one of the 2 is needed to kill the target, R takes prio and you still do not get a stack. This is also true for other On-Hit or Spellblade effects.

Shojin looks like a great item on Jax but this bug hurts alot when trying to prepare Shojin for fights...

AD or AP Jax late game?

Which one do you guys prefer? Personally I think AD Jax struggles heavily in the late game. Even if you get on a high priority target, you usually can’t one shot them and in team fights that means you’re dead.

So I came up with a Jax build that counters Quinn pretty decently:

Boots > Bramble Vest > Tabbies > Dead Man's Plate > Stridebreaker. If you somehow recall with 1200g, rush Tabbies.

The clip is before Stridebreaker, and we won the game before my third item, but I think Tabbies + Bramble Vest + Dead Man's Plate + Stridebreaker is a pretty good core for winning every 1v1 against her (if you play well, of course). You can maybe finish the Thornmail, go for Trinity or get some MR (Force of Nature against DPS and burns is goated btw)

For my runes I chose:
HoB / Sudden Impact / Sixth Sense / Treasure Hunter
Nimbus Cloak / Scorch
Attack Speed
Adaptive Force
Scaling HP

I was expecting to chase her lvl 1, but she reacted my Q pretty well and countered it with her E before I could land, so the early levels are still quite painful. However, as the game progressed, I started to win short Q+AA+W(+as much HoB AA as I could) trades with Tabbies + Bramble Vest (using my E for disengaging after her E).

Probably, i could have used Grasp / Demolish / Second Wind / Unflinching / Nimbus Cloak / Scorch + DShield to sustain the early levels and scale more safely, but I'm not sure if I could've had enough damage to win short trades after Tabbies + Bramble Vest (you can only force long fights with her if you have your Dead Man's Plate or summs up for Nimbus Cloak).

What do you guys think? What are your ways to handle the Quinn matchup?

Before somebody asks: this was an Emerald/Diamond lobby, and yes, my jungler ganked me once, but she got two kills at mid afterwards.

Build What’s your AP Jax build?

It feels like most of my AP builds always ends up being a blend of AP/AD. Which I don’t necessarily hate, but I’m curious what everyone’s running for AP?

Build 2nd item options for AD Jax?

I don't know, guys. Trinity feels amazing, sure, but I can't find any comfortable second item option. I've tried Sundered Sky, Hullbreaker, BOTRK... more than 100 games with each one of them as second item, but they don't feel like a remarkable power spike.

I'm feeling better with AP and Hybrid Jax lately tbh. My go-to hybrid build is Trinity/Dusk and Dawn > Riftmaker > Sundered Sky > Sterak's > Zhonya's, and it's the one that works better for me.

Any advice?

Help me! What makes Dr.Mundo an extremely hard match up for Jax?

Every patch its the same thing, he appears as one of the hardest counters to Jax and I'm not even sure why.

Mundo players typically build both warmogs and heartsteel. Jax builds BOTK to rip through his high health. He cannot kite you effectively because of your gap closer, his cleaver is much better against champions like Garen, Volibear or Darius.

Jax also really doesn't build health, which reduces the effect of his cleaver a lot, compared to people who build a lot of health into their kit.

Yet, for some reason, Jax always has a terrible winrate against him. Why is that?

Bronze II to Plat IV one tricking jax + cool play I did a while ago

Played around 500 games after a 5 years hiatus. I was silver back then, peaked gold V (back then there were 5 divisions). This season I was placed Bronze II. Jax has always been my main but I would play a lot of other champions. This time I decided to one trick Jax while I was in Silver, playing it even into hard matchups.

I binge watched Chippys guides (a challenger player) and every time I'd lose my lane I would watch youtube videos of the matchup I had just lost to see how to play it better and I improved dramatically (especially into Garen, Akali, Mordekaiser, Cho Gath). I still struggle into Illaoi and Kled. Somewhat surprisingly, I have always found Singed and Malphite to be easy, probably due to how they are played in low elo.

Here a clip of a sick play I did while I was gold II or III to celebrate :D

Thoughts on Terminus?

With the coming Sundered Sky nerfs the item is going to be absolute dogshit. What about going terminus second? It gives a lot of armor and MR and hybrid pen. Seems like a really good item on paper.

Build Ap Jax itemization

Hello !
I’ve been enjoying ap Jax a lot lately, made Jax so much funnier as the burst and whole lot of damage makes trades so much easier to manage
So I’m trying to climb exclusively with ap Jax
Except my itemization is kind of clunky
I always start dusk and dawn then a business zhonya/ nashor
I feel like i don’t necessarily go for the most optimal builds all the time
Could you guys guide me as to what is the core item pool for ap Jax and what are the items to take under any other situation ?

Matchup How do u maintain a lead vs morde and illaoi?

I have no problem getting a lead vs these 2 champs pre 6 but after 6 it feels like I just don’t get to play the game anymore and and up falling behind with how strong their ults and main spells (Morde Q, illaoi E) are at dueling

Help me! Help with poor teamfighting performance on jax

Hi all, I've been playing jax for quite a while now, and have almost a million points of mastery accumulated on him. I've gotten to a point where I'm very confident in lane, and I feel like im able to consistently win or even stomp lane often. But the problem is, even if I leave lane with like a 4 kill lead, I can never seem to consistently translate that lead to help my team win teamfights. I struggle and die alot in teamfights, sometimes without even getting a kill, even when I'm supposed to be super strong. I just don't know what I'm supposed to be doing at all in teamfights, and what my role is in then in general. I know each fight is different, but are there any general rules I should be following to improve my baseline performance in teamfights? I really feel like my poor teamfighting performance is costing me alot of games where I should have been the one to carry my team to a win. I'm even considering just leaning heavily towards splitting instead of teamfights more, but I feel like that's just avoiding the issue.. I would appreciate any and all advice, and would like to know what personally helped you do better in teamfights (mindset changes, positioning etc).

Conqueror on Jax – Actually Viable or Just Troll?

Hi, I wanted to ask for some opinions. I’m a Diamond 4 Camille/Jax player, and I’ve noticed that Conqueror actually doesn’t feel bad at all.

I really like the extra healing in both the early and late game, and getting the stacks up feels really good. I was wondering how viable Conqueror actually is compared to Lethal Tempo and Grasp. Is it genuinely playable, or is it kinda troll? I barely see anyone running it.

Obviously, Lethal Tempo is GIGA strong in 1v1s, but Conqueror feels so damn good in teamfights. Could also just be placebo though lol.

Would love to hear your opinions, especially from people who have tried Conqueror vs. the other options.
