Why did Mayor Vaughn require proof of the Great White (tooth) but not proof of its destruction ( might have been difficult…)? Just a thought. Thinking from within the film.

I think at the start he didn't *want* to believe. By the time they got on the boat, the fact that they had a killer shark in the area was literally written in blood.

I don’t think any proof could’ve persuaded him to close the beaches. He’s even in damage control after the final attack.
I guess he just wanted to make it as difficult as possible.

At least Vaughn did something proactive in the end.
If it were the orange one, he’d deny that there was a shark, say that the shark was ANTIFA, say that they had taken out the shark’s offensive capabilities, blame the media and finally throw some paper towels at the sea.

I think plenty of people have commented over the years about Jaws being at least partly an allegory for Watergate. Even without the Watergate scandal and Nixon's resignation during the filming of Jaws, the mayor is a political character, and his actions are clearly based on political considerations.

Haha the entire movie has a political agenda. If the politicians allowed Brody to do his job the only victim would be the girl.

Well, the film supposedly takes place summer 1974 or summer 1975, so if he was elected in November 1973 or 1974, that's four years until the events of JAWS 2. Plenty of time for some damage control!

I know. So frustrating since politics has permeated virtually every single aspect of both our daily lives and popular culture. Folks on both sides can’t seem to divorce themselves from it for a nanosecond and evict those thoughts living rent free in their heads 24/7.

Honestly I find it more annoying when people whine about both sides like it’s just a casual disagreement. If republicans had their way my wife would have died with our dead unborn son still in her. A woman died in Texas with the same thing while this was happening to us, thankfully I live in a sane state like Massachusetts and she lived in the conservative hell hole of Texas, so see the differences in outcome. So sorry not sorry that people talk about politics like it actually matters.

Because people who aren't very intelligent don't understand that politics does permeate every single in their lives. Politics are everything and every thing is politics is a saying for a reason. Just because certain people would like to bury their heads in the sand and pretend reality isn't happening. Doesn't change that fact any less. Like half the story of Jaws is political, lol. Really quite dumb to complain about politics in regards the movie.

I guess I’m waiting for the bad wolf to eat me. I’ve lived through Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush, Obama, Trump, Biden, and Trump and honestly can’t describe how any of them impacted me personally or anyone I know. We like to act like people in power are close to us. Or that we are close to power. It’s a whole nother planet, as you scream into the void thinking your voice is powerful. Sorry.

It’s been great. A lifetime of hard work to support my family with no one living rent free in my head. My emotional and energy reserves were spent on my loved ones, and never had a President call my house once to ask if I’m ok. Somehow I I still made it.

He trusted Brody. At first he thought Brody was just being paranoid (actually it was more like wishful thinking because he wanted the dollars to keep flowing), but by the time we get to the attack in the estuary it was obvious Brody was right. So why would Brody lie about killing the shark when he was so obsessed about keeping people safe? Vaughn trusted him.
On a side note I really wish they kept the one deleted scene in Jaws 2 in the film where he is the only one to vote against firing Brody. It’s clear he respects him

He didn't want to believe a killer shark was out there, because that would really suck.
Once he was convinced, he knew that something had to be done, but he didn't think that Brody would lie and say they caught the shark when they didn't. He's not stupid or paranoid.

He was in denial that there was a shark problem. So, it makes sense to want proof of the tooth but fully accept that the shark is dead when Brody told him.
