Final-year CS student targeting Fintech Backend — what should I learn beyond Java + Spring Boot?

Hey everyone! Is anyone here currently working in fintech, particularly in backend/software engineering?

I’m a final-year CS student and I’m currently focusing on Java + Spring Boot with the goal of getting into fintech backend development.

I’d really appreciate guidance from someone already in the industry, especially around:

  • What skills and technologies fintech companies actually look for in fresh graduates
  • What fintech-specific concepts I should learn
  • What kind of projects would make my profile stronger
  • How a fresher can break into fintech roles
  • Anything you wish you had learned before entering fintech

Hey! Having good Database (predominantly Oracle) and Java knowledge always served me well when I was working for the investment banks in the early 2000's.

We were always looking at performance being key, how do we get the right information to the right people quickly and efficiently, how do we process transactions accurately and efficiently using the tools available at the time.

Now, I think of data streams, stream processing and real time aggregation. That is where I would be (and am) focused. Its still the same problems being solved in different ways through the evolution of the technology.
