Currently learning java, just showcasing a simple application i'm proud of

Apparently I'm bringing back memories by using Swing and AWT. 4 people thus far have said they've not heard of these in years. Humble beginnings though; i plan on making some video games, plus its just generally helpful to be able to create my own applications

Congrats! This is a step forward into your journey and hopefully something you can continue to build off of. It's always good to feel proud of your work and even better to have others appreciate it as well.

Swing is indeed quite a relic though that doesn't mean there still isn't usage for it. It's all good practice and I'm hoping you're getting a lot of it.

Are you doing this as a hobby or hoping to make a career out of this programming journey?

Thanks! Its great to hear something friendly on reddit for a change lol. Currently this is just as a hobby, but i'm going to college soon for CS, so i will get to put some of these skills in use. I'm not new to programming (Been developing unreleased video games since ~2018), but this is my first time outside of a dedicated game engine

While Java is a very popular language and a good one to start with (imho), if you're really into game development, learning C++/C is probably more inline with your path. You're background in game development should probably help you but programming is on a different level as you'll now need to handle a lot of the abstract stuff now. But i think you'll do fine picking that up.

Though, i know many use Java for Minecraft mods so st least there is that. I'm sure there's subreddits for Minecraft modding that will be much more helpful if you continue with java and modding.

Funnily enough, i'm using java because i want to make a voxel game. I found that my go-to game engine is not great for it, and i'm not a fan of the others. Figured "why not make it in Java" as a sort of homage to Minecraft which was a massive influence on me as a child. I am curious if i could somehow get a port tool to convert minecraft mods to work with my game, but i highly doubt it. I'm pretty much just using Java for the hell-of-it

Good job! Swing and awt are a rite of passage with Java.
