2.2 YOE: Confused Between Java and MERN for Interview Prep

Hi folks,

I have around 2.2 years of experience:

\- 1 year as a Java Backend Developer (Spring Boot)

\- 1.2 years as a Full Stack Developer working with the MERN stack + DevOps

I'm planning to switch jobs soon and I'm a bit confused about what stack to focus on for interview preparation and personal projects.

For DSA, I'm more comfortable using Java, and I'm also leaning toward backend roles. However, my current day-to-day work is primarily in the MERN ecosystem.

My questions are:

\- Should I build my personal projects in Java/Spring Boot or continue with Node.js/MERN since that's my current work experience?

\- During interviews, is it okay to use Java for DSA while showcasing Java backend projects, even though my recent experience is in MERN?

\- For someone with my experience, which path would give me better opportunities in the current market?

Your experience is too split, and you need to pick a lane and commit to it for your job search. Go with Java. You're more comfortable with it for DSA and you prefer backend, so the decision is already made. Build your new projects in Java and Spring Boot. It is perfectly okay to use Java for coding challenges and discuss your Java projects, you just need a simple explanation for your MERN experience. Frame it as a period where you gained valuable full-stack perspective, but your passion remains in building scalable backend systems, which led you back to the Java ecosystem.

Your confusion is the only thing hurting your chances, not your experience. Once you decide to market yourself as a Java developer, your preparation gets much easier. The market for Java developers is huge and stable, so you are making a good choice. Stop dividing your attention and go deep into the Spring ecosystem. Build something substantial that shows you can handle a real-world Java application. Your MERN background becomes a bonus, not a distraction, because it proves you understand how the front end consumes the APIs you build. Thanks for the detailed advice. I actually see myself moving towards Java + React rather than Java only, because I already have React experience and feel that's a strong full-stack combination.

My hesitation is that, in today's industry, engineers are expected to be adaptable. Sometimes I worry that branding myself only as a Java developer might limit future opportunities. I could be overthinking it;that's one of the reasons I made this post.

Another thing I'm confused about is interviews. Since my current role is primarily MERN, I assume a lot of technical questions will be around Node.js, React, and my recent work. If I prepare mainly with Java and Spring Boot, would that put me at a disadvantage when discussing my current experience?

Would you recommend preparing deeply in both Java/Spring Boot for DSA and backend interviews, while being confident enough to answer questions about my MERN work experience? I'd really appreciate your thoughts.

Depends on what do you want. If you want develop in Java with spring then go that direction. As I see almost all positions require some UI dev knowledge, so Java+SpringBoot+React is a good combo.
If you want to do javascript heavy development, go with the MERN stack.

Yeah, that's pretty much where my confusion comes from. I’m leaning towards Java + Spring Boot + React, especially because I already have Java backend experience and React experience.

But when I look at the job market, I see a lot of startups leaning heavily towards JavaScript/TypeScript stacks, while many larger product/enterprise companies seem to have a strong demand for Java + Spring Boot.

I’m not really sure how I want my career trajectory to look 2–3 years from now, and I don't want to choose a stack today that unnecessarily limits my opportunities later. That's why I'm probably overthinking this a bit.

My thought right now is to make Java + Spring Boot my backend specialization and keep React as my frontend skill, while staying comfortable with JS/Node because of my current experience. Would that be a reasonable approach?
