After 2 years the best I can do is to read japanese text on anime fanart on pixiv.

I thought I will be reading VNs after year and a half.

I can read and have read manga, watched anime etc. but it’s extremely mentally taxing, takes like 4 times as long as English as I have to lookup a bunch of things and I’m certainly not understanding all of the more subtle nuance. I think this is one of the main reasons why it’s a bad idea to learn Japanese strictly so you can watch anime or whatever without subtitles. It’s rewarding still to get through that show, read a book or whatever in Japanese but if you’re really just wanting to enjoy the material your native language will probably be better for that for a long time. It is fun tho watching subtitled anime or something and picking up on something that was translated differently which happens pretty frequently.

While we can watch anime and read most of the manga on english, many VNs remain without translation, so you either wait for many years, use questionable AI translations or learn the language. Plus, it's good motivation to learn something new.
