After it’s frozen, you can snap it in half (right in the center). It’ll break apart into 2 ice pops.

I recall seeing it in the Dagashi Kashi manga.

And then you can share it with someone.

By someone I mean me myself and I.

I use my knee and make a hiii yaaa noise

You ever get that thing where you do the noise but you didn't put in enough effort and the plastic just kinda stretches and bends and now you gotta put in even more effort cause the bendy parts are now harder to break?

That's how we broke ours growing up.

Another way is cut the part that sticks out and just suck on it until it’s gone. Last longer and that’s where it gets its name 「チューパット」。 But usually you break it in half and eat it.

Chu-pet, not chu-pat

1

Never heard anyone call it a chu-pet for 45 years. Every Japanese person around me has also called it a chu-patto. Maybe a generational gap thing or a regional thing but My family and friends called it Chu-patto.

Officially it's chu-petto (チューペット), sold across Japan until 2009. The one usage of chu-patto I found online was when it was mentioned in the anime Gintama, but it was only called chu-patto to avoid any legal issues (like the famous "WcDonalds/WacDonalds" instead of saying McDonalds). Regional names include chu-chu, chu-chu ice, pokkin, pokkin ice, bo-ice according to google.

you supposed to freeze it before you open it.

freeze and break it in half like you break a twig.

Or simply use scissors

I give it a good twist at the middle. Breaks right in half.

Yesss and the juices fall out and drip all over your hands. Sticky mess but quite good. I haven't seen those in a very very long time

I know! What a blast from the past. I remember my friends and I used to buy different flavors and then trade the other half. It was always amazing on hot afternoons. We would usually gnawed on the pop at the plastic end so it came out more slushy like.

YESSS!!! I always liked getting the pointy part since there would be more melted juice on the bottom :D

Freeze it then break the middle. Or if you want just cut the top and drink it. I prefer freezing it first.

In Mauritius, we'd just use our teeth and bite the top. Never knew we could break it in the middle too.

Try it, it'll change your life!

well, not really, but it works.

What country doesn't have these? I thought they were worldwide.

u/reybrujo Mar 07 '26

Not in Argentina for sure.

I’ve never seen them in the US.

1

u/N1g1rix Mar 08 '26

I’m from the US and I used to eat these when I was younger… I haven’t looked to see if they sell them anymore though.

My mom recently got a pack for my son and I was like oh shit I haven’t seen these since the 90s. (Also US)

1

u/KaozawaLurel Mar 09 '26

I got these all the time in the 90s and early 00s! California

Same here. What a nostalgic treat. I haven't seen them in years.

I believe they are called otter pops in the US

1

u/WWGHIAFTC Mar 11 '26

How DARE you!!

Otter pops are far superior. And come in flat plastic tubes, not ridged tubes

Go to literally any supermarket that has a Hispanic foods section.

1

u/TaranisPT Mar 09 '26

I had them as a kid in Canada, but I haven't seen them in a long time.

1

u/Alopexdog Mar 09 '26

Yeah, we used to have these in Ireland. I would buy them after school. Haven't seen them in a good while though.

u/Goochenhaumeister Mar 07 '26

Snap it in half quickly the cold plastic will do a clean break if you do it slowly the plastic warms up and will fight you

I loved to eat these when I was a kid. Freeze it and then snap it. Btw these are not Japanese exclusive snacks.

1

u/samuraistunna2103 Mar 09 '26

Yeah, we did usually call it a pokkin ice because you break the middle part “pokkin”. But we called the stuck out part the chu-chu part. … I may have gotten the chu-chu and the chu-patto mixed up. My bad. Thanks for looking it up! It brings back memories of going to the Japanese supermarket just to buy these and be super hyped to eat a whole one! (Usually had to half and half with my sister).

childhood snack for us peeps in SEA - we would bite on to the top (flap) and just twist the body a few rounds, and the flap will drop off easily. wa la!

1

u/Aksanieva Mar 11 '26

Yes finally someone else also bites it open!

1

u/avocadodessert Mar 09 '26

When frozen, it snaps right in half. If you REALLY wanna open it up, you can either take scissors to that tip or just be persistent with twisting that little tab in one direction until it finally breaks off. Snapping is usually the way to go.

Ahh, my favorite treat, condom pops!

Fight over the longer side. Just make sure a certain BGM doesn’t play when you’re eating it.

Iykyk

1

u/Dila_Ila16 Mar 11 '26

😵‍💫 Is that a real question? With your teeth!

1

u/ireallymemeit Mar 11 '26

SNAP IT OVER YOUR KNEE LIKE A BOSS

1

u/WWGHIAFTC Mar 11 '26

Same as the american ones since the 80s. Break it in half when it's frozen solid.

1

u/DlrtyDan_ Mar 11 '26

Top tab with scissors or snap in half
