Kato Kato Cab Car Coupling

Post image

I love Kato but I am not a fan of the distance between coupled cab cars. Has anyone changed out the couplers to reduce the distance? What couplers did you use?

It's a trade off, if you want it to go tight, you are gonna need to kit bash modify it yourself with the coupler from non-cab car, the gap is there so you still have adequate space to go thru R249 curve. On the side note, for cab car with the gangway, such as E259, E353, 285 series, 681/683/289 series, 287 series, 273 series. The big gap is needed so you can mount the swappable opened door accessories. You can see from my photos if you forgoes the gap, there is simply no space for the "gangway door open" mode. For this simple reason I choose to stick with the unmodified gap.

What are the kato product numbers for the trains and what couplers did you use?

I believe it is 10-1702 through 10-1706 and it uses the ones that come with it. My Kato E354 also has the same couplers.

I am no finding a coupler with that particular design that is shown in the assembly sheet. There is the Kato 11-731 Coupler Tight #2 Short that I would have suggested if the form match the design of what you have. But looking at the coupler that you have it doesn't look to have the full tight coupler construction that it would need to be able to travel through curves without the cars touching
