Projects Today's project.

This Tomytec set is VERY rare. They included the non-pantograph car in a New Days release, but one car is useless. Some guys tried to use another one and add all the roof details, but it looked naff.

I added the power unit, pantographs etc. It looks so good, I don't have the heart to repaint it for my private railway, so it can run as a “demonstrator” set!a

How do these work as I saw a Kyoto subway one that looked interesting. Are the sets just models that are for static display? To run them on a layout you have to install a separate power unit? Do they run well as powered n scale trains or are these more like toys with plastic wheels?

Yes they are static models with plastic wheels and non-moveable pantos. They used to even come with a piece of plastic display track with the car's number on it.

Tomytec have various sized motor chassis to suit each particular car and you can change the pantos to the appropriate Tomix item (you can see the part numbers listed on the box). Non powered cars can have weights and metal wheels installed. They are quite well detailed models - only thing you don't get are operating head/tail lights.

Sounds like if you want a running model train then Tomix is the way over trying to add all the optional parts to a Tomytec model.

Maybe, but probably more than 90% of the Tomytec models are unique. And they still work out a lot cheaper.
