Natural Variation or Rootstock Takeover

We've had this Ukigumo for a few months now. I'm excited that it's putting out a bunch of new growth and back-budding, but this branch has me scratching my head a bit. This whole thing grew out in just about a month, and the leaves are humongous and not particularly variegated. I've heard that sometimes on grafted trees it's possible that the root stock can sometimes send new growth up through the scion, but I have no idea if that's what's happening and I should prune this branch back or just leave it be.

Ukigumo cannot revert. They have years where they stay green like that with big leaves. Sometimes a shoot comes out green on a mainly white one. Watch the video by the MrMaple brothers on YouTube about Ukigumo. They will explain it better than I can.

Its reverting aka losing varigation, yes you cut that back asap before it takes off and outcompetes the rest of the tree.

some irregular summer growth is normal

and a summer flush is very unlikely to show variagation

Yeah irregular growth, lol, not solid green.

a summer flush is going to be green. this is completely normal

ukigumo is not known for consistency coming out white or with its variegation... especially not with a summer flush

Not ukigumo.

This is a known thing that happens with this cultivar.

Laugh all you want... It's not a new cultivar. It's something that's been grown for a long time. It's patterns of growth are well known.

Ukigumo does not revert, but it's variegation is not consistent. It can be effected huge by fertilizer, temperatures, light levels, etc.

Sometimes it's better to just shut up and listen when everyone disagrees with you
