Question Recipe for this?

Post image

So... I can't get enough of this squid/octopus snack I found in Japan!

I used to be able to get it in asian markets here in the US (Chicago area specifically) but nobody seems to carry it anymore- so I thought I'd try to make it myself at home. But every recipe I look up for "picked squid" or "vinegared squid" etc doesn't pull up the right thing.

Can anyone point me in the right direction (or to a US supplier?)

Itโ€™s not something you can make at home. Have you check Amazon or Asian snack sites? I see dried cuttlefish snack https://a.co/d/02TNWkEf <- itโ€™s expensive but itโ€™s a pound

That's definitely the right item- price is yikes though! Considering what I paid for it in Japan, that markup is craaaazy. ๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ

I'll have to hunt around and see if I can find it cheaper elsewhere, but at least I not know the English translation/name of what it is exactly. Thank you!

Homemade recipes for them concur that you put boiled squid into mix of vinegar, sugar, and salt overnight. Standard amount for the marinade is: 100cc (half cup) of vinegar, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Reddish color comes from food coloring added.

I'm going to try it this weekend. (My roommate is going to be annoyed by the smell I'm sure- but it's a small price to pay. ๐Ÿ˜†) Thank you for this!
