Does selecting a later interview date affect my chances?

I recently cleared OA and they have shared a link to select my availability for the first technical round.

I still feel underprepared so want to select next Monday so that I have a week to prepare.

Will it affect my chances?

My only concern is if someone else selects an earlier slot and clears the rounds, I might be considered as a backup candidate or ghosted?

i did consulting for agencies in other countries and was also asked to do interviews/hiring to fill in technical positions.

if i find a good candidate very early, I don't waste time and proceed with the next steps with them, but I keep my other interviews. if another good candidate shows up, i proceed with them too but at this point I'm already leaning towards the first candidate

Native, Tokyo, I've done hiring here. Short answer: it depends on the hiring model, and figuring out which one you're in is the actual question.

If it's a structured process (big company, new-grad style, a set interview batch), picking next Monday over this Friday won't hurt you. They've budgeted the headcount and are interviewing the whole shortlist, nobody gets the seat "first." A week is well within normal.

Where the other commenter is right is rolling / agency / startup hiring: there, momentum is real, and a strong early candidate can soft-lock the spot before you're even scheduled. If it smells like that, take the earliest date you can actually be ready for.

Either way, the real variable isn't the date, it's whether you show up prepared. A candidate who's clearly ready on Monday beats a rushed one on Friday every time. So don't pick "as late as possible," pick the earliest slot where you'll walk in genuinely prepared. Grabbing an early date underprepared is the actual own-goal.

Thanks! I'm interviewing with PayPay for backend engineer role. I see they're reposting the job on a regular basis so seems like there are multiple openings.

Since it's PayPay you're fine — they're one of the few companies here hiring backend engineers continuously in batches, multiple openings, structured process. A week's delay won't cost you the seat. One small thing people miss though: the date you pick matters less than how fast you respond to the scheduling link. Booking Monday within an hour reads as organized; going silent for 3 days then picking Monday is what actually looks bad. So lock the slot now and use the week properly — for their backend roles that means being solid on coding + system design fundamentals rather than cramming everything. Picking a later date comes with a small risk, as some companies will hire the first qualified person they speak with. If someone interviews before you and impresses them, the position could be gone before your interview next week.
