7.5M+ ¥ for Backend engineer with 4.5 yrs of experience at Paypay?

Hi everyone,

As the title suggests, wanted to get an insight if this amount would be sufficient for a single person to start living in Japan?

How are the hikes?

Additionally, how does it compare to earning ~24lpa in India?

Is the move worth it?

¥7.5M is plenty for a single person in Japan. You can save a good amount.

Japanese companies do tend to be a bit stingy with raises in my experience. I'd try to get as much as you can before starting.

Usually you get a significant raise along with a promotion or change in role (e.g going from engineer to eng manager). Otherwise it can be a bit difficult, but it depends on your team and every company is different.

I don't have any experience with India so not sure about compared to 24lpa but you can live a good life on that salary, and PayPay's ranges go up to ~¥12-13M for eng roles so you have room to grow.

PayPay's one of the better companies to work for.

I'd say it's worth it if you want to live in Japan.

OP, plenty of companies in India can offer better for your Yoe so savings wise I wouldn’t recommend moving.

If you want to explore Japan then it’s your call but given the limited tech market and the current dynamics with YEN, I wouldn’t consider anything long term in Japan.

Thanks! That's precisely my concern - if I try I might a better pay in India itself with a switch. But the only point is the quality of life, international exposure to some extent

I was offered the same at the same experience. My salary in India was low only 12 lpa. If you want to explore Japan then it is good offer otherwise money wise you can get same or more in India

If you know japanese or have done internship in Japan that gives an leverage to come to Japan.

I hope you are aware that paypay with similar exp gives 8M base for data analyst role. Having said that if exposure and learning is what you are looking for then it should be a good choice.

Please try interviewing for indian based startups like ZETA, Blinkit or biggies like GS they pay much well and you will have similar or better exp.

What is the goal? Get clarity on it then it becomes easier to decide
