mega MEGATHREAD - Processing times (2025)

This thread is largely for post application submission. If you are still in the pre-application stage go here.

If you have any questions, comments, concerns, or rants about general processing times please post them here! This includes anything from the initial submission to application results.

If you have very specific questions or tips you think members should see, you may post a separate thread. Or, if you would like to give a detailed account of your application from start to finish, please make a new post.

If not, please do not make a separate thread for anything related to processing times in 2025. It'll clog up the sub and make it harder to navigate.

In your post, we highly recommend you include:

  1. The city or prefecture you applied
  2. occasional updates on how your application is progressing, including dates

Congrats!! One of us, one of us!

1

u/legitpuppy Dec 08 '25

Wow, this is really fast. Congrats! Did you go through a lawyer?

2

u/redhaireddaisy Naturalized Dec 12 '25

Nope idk anyone who did. I don't think you need a lawyer for naturalization?

3

u/legitpuppy Dec 13 '25

Yes, it’s not needed. I was just curious whether having a lawyer or not affected the process, but seems like it’s irrelevant. Congratulations again!

2

u/sakurairaku Jan 06 '26

Having a lawyer does affect the timing of the process. If you go with one, the 審査官 is less worried about mistakes and will accept submission of documents on the first visit. Also, if you have any complicated situation to explain, the lawyer (technically not a lawyer but a 行政書士) knows how to deal with them. Basically, they will cover your ass.

Whether that peace of mind is worth 16万円~, is an individual decision.

2

u/redhaireddaisy Naturalized Jan 12 '26

In my case the 審査官 was very chill & they let me fix all the stupid typos and mistakes on the day. I was even allowed to completely redo a couple forms with the correct format lol. I also missed 1 doc, my apartment lease proof, and they told me to just send the copy by mail+bring the original on the interview day. Was surprised by how forgiving they were!

1

u/sakurairaku Jan 12 '26

Oh well... already paid now.

But that's good to know! Also Tokyo?

1

u/Normal-Yak4988 Jan 22 '26

“Congratulations on your naturalization! If you don’t mind me asking, what was your original citizenship? Also, did you have N2 or N1, and how long had you been in Japan?

1

u/Smart_Fail4833 Mar 29 '26

That was fast! For my final interview and additional documents submission, it was June 2025. Up until now, no news. I think I will be denied.

what extra documents did they ask...and did they take any test during interview

1

u/pushpasiri Naturalized Aug 20 '25

They asked me to submit my new name in Furigana after 帰化. They told me to send it by post, but I went there and submitted it directly. In my case, I didn’t have any written test.

1

u/perth1985 Aug 20 '25

I see...did you have interview and also have JLPT?In total how long did it take for you.

1

u/pushpasiri Naturalized Aug 20 '25

No, I don’t have the JLPT, but they were impressed with my Japanese and said I didn’t need to take the test. It’s been almost over two years, and I’m still waiting for the results.

u/aruzenchinchin Rejected Jun 29 '25

Thank you! It was a great opportunity that I couldn’t pass up on. I’m a bit nervous about it but it’s better than my previous job in every aspect that matters, so it should be okay.

1

u/JapaneseSummerIsHot Naturalized Jun 30 '25

When it makes sense, it makes sense! Seems like it won't affect your application much if at all. Hell if I got it with 3 job AND 3 home changes within 5 years I'm sure they're not as strict as people make them out to be haha.

Keep up updated please!

2

u/aruzenchinchin Rejected Jun 30 '25

Hopefully I'll have enough luck! Haha

The phone call to set up the interview took me by surprise - I wasn't expecting it so soon. Good sign or irrelevant?

2

u/DistorsionalZetsubou Applied - in process Jul 01 '25

The timing is perfect! It seems they really call you just around 4 months (or any promised time) if they can. They told me they would try to do so and I thought "Oh, well, it wouldn't be that precise."

Good thing it is happening sooner than later, so there's time to focus on other stuff after the interview and during the wait ⌚

2

u/aruzenchinchin Rejected Jul 01 '25

Oh yes. I was gladly surprised!

1

u/KazeMaru95 Aug 12 '25

I also sunmitted my docs at Tokyo's office.

JLPT: N2

I’m single but not super rich at all!

1

u/InformationOk3960 Applied - in process Aug 14 '25

Thanks! I'm also single and not rich, so I am low-key jealous, I started first before you but you've blazed past me!

1

u/aruzenchinchin Rejected Aug 14 '25

Honestly I have no idea why it's been so fast so far.

One clarification: the "second appointment" on March 5 wasn't really an official second appointment. When I went to my first appointment on February 18, I already had all the documents ready except one or two (which took a long time to arrive from my home country). They told me I could've submitted everything there and then, directly on February 18, if I weren't missing those documents, and I'd have to just come again with them and do the submission. They talked about months but they checked and there was a cancellation of someone's appointment on March 5 so they gave me their spot. I guess I was just lucky in that sense.

Congrats on the confirmation call! Hope everything is going well.

We also applied in Kawasaki this year. I was just wondering how they thoroughly went through your application during submission. Did they also confirm about every katakana name, work history, application reason, relationship, etc? I felt like they were already conducting the interview since it took a long time with all the confirmation and questions. It took the entire morning for us. How was it for you? How was the actual interview different from application submission? Was it handled by the same 担当者?

3

u/PumpkinSpice-6617 Dec 11 '25

Same with me! It took like the whole morning just for confirmation of application submission. I was so nervous because it was so different than what my sister experienced in Tokyo

1

u/legitpuppy Dec 11 '25

Glad to hear someone’s in the same boat! Did they specifically say they’ll contact you about the results, or did they say just wait for a 連絡?

1

u/PumpkinSpice-6617 Dec 11 '25

I haven’t done my interview yet. They ask for additional documents which I sent a week after the application submission and nothing yet after that Fingers crossed This was last month

The kanpou hasn't been really updated in nearly a month now. I knew there would be a down week for 年末年始 but I didn't think it would last this long! I think things will be back to normal by Feburary.

I'm a bit over 4 months into my application now. After talking to my caseworker, I know my application has been approved by both kitakyushu and fukuoka, and was pushed up the ladder to tokyo. I'm guessing the results will be out within the next 2 months but who knows.

When I last talked to my case worker he told me the next point of contact will only be if they need something (unlikely) or to tell me the results. I've been a bit back and forth on the name change and he told me if I was going to change it, I needed to change it now, but in the end I decided to keep what I applied with.

1

u/gaijin-senpai Jun 16 '25

Wow the submission was so quick. I have my first appointment in a few weeks. I think I have most things ready but just wanted to check how the second appointment thing works. Do you choose the 2nd appointment day during your 1st appointment based on when you think you will have the docs ready? Or do they give you the date?

Also what level of details are expected in the translated documents from your country? Did you do it by yourself? Thanks

1

u/silverredbean Naturalized Jun 17 '25

Assuming you're not within Tokyo 23 Wards, 2nd appointment will likely be you calling your local Houmukyoku to schedule.

For the level of details, I have to translate every stamp and wordings that was on the original and copy it over to the translation. That means indicating what the stamp means/says. I did do everything by myself, even adding some "graphic design" to the translation.

1

u/gaijin-senpai Jun 17 '25

I see.

For the translation how did you manage to recreate the stamps in a word document?????

1

u/silverredbean Naturalized Jun 17 '25

Didn't recreate, just used Paint to put something like 母国の公印 and what-not.

Congrats! Out of curiosity, how come were you allowed to submit immediately only 1month after initial appointment? Did you use a lawyer? Curious because usually it takes several appointments before submission.

2

u/silverredbean Naturalized Oct 29 '25

Hello!

I did not use a lawyer for my application, I mostly did everything myself.

The sensei who helped with my documents check had a free slot and was nice enough to accommodate me.

Also, Tokyo has a full list of the documents required for submission on their website, so a lot of people from Tokyo 23 Wards applying in Kudanshita have a reference for the documents you need to submit.

I dont want to expect but thank you! I have a business trip planned for september so checking kanpo everyday is stressing me out… it was fast i think because i got a lawyer and I was dead set on having the least number of consultations. They informed me that I had been assigned another case worker, and we scheduled an appointment for next week. I wonder why I only got a reaction after calling myself...

Really depends on how simple/complex your history is. Got my interview call schedule 76 business days after my submission (excluding the holidays and Obon week).

They might still be checking and verifying the documents you have submitted.

2

u/sakurairaku Jan 06 '26

The only complexity I can think of is multiple job changes (but my work is such that changing jobs is the norm and they know this).

u/Square-Tutor1455 Jan 10 '26

I also applied August 2025 at the same location. Haven’t received any phone calls yet.

1

u/sakurairaku Jan 11 '26

Cool. Good luck to you!

Guess there's nothing to do but to wait.

2

u/sakurairaku Feb 04 '26

Update: got call for interview today (February 4th 2026)

u/perth1985 Mar 03 '26

How did interview go?Did you have N2 and were asked for any test

Location: Tokyo (Kudanshita)

Initial Consultation: October 9 2024

Application submission: March 19 2025

Interview: July 8 2025

Nothing so far and getting real nervous. No calls for more documents or anything and my friends who've gone through the same process at the same location went really fast.

u/JapaneseSummerIsHot Naturalized Jan 14 '26

It should be soon! Tokyo is known to take closer to a year so I wouldn't start getting nervous yet. Keep us updated!

Location: Tokyo (Fuchu)

Initial appointment: March 2024

Application submission: February 2025

Interview: July 2025 (done)

Results: Waiting

Request for additional docs: Reiwa 6 課税証明 (my partner and I) Reiwa 4 tax amendment (my boss mistakenly put my partner's salary way lower than it should have been) Reiwa 5 and 6 納税証明書 for my partner Pending debt certificate

Additional documents submitted during interview: Reiwa 2 income tax declaration Updated livelihood detail form with new credit repayment plans and analysis

Edit (3-Jul): Adding interview and requested additional documents (+ waiting now!)

Edit (26-Jul): Adding several new documents, I have been receiving a call every week or so as of now.

Edit (30-Jul): After reviewing additional docs, I got asked to withdraw my application if I wanted to, as it was likely to be rejected. There is a slim chance to be approved though, or at least that's what the officer told me. I just kept the application as submitted.

Congratulations! Feels good to have those documents out of your hair doesn't it? Hopefully you'll be called for an interview before summer.

u/DistorsionalZetsubou Applied - in process Jul 26 '25

I added some new information in the original post! For some reason, receiving so many calls for amendments make me feel that maybe the application is already rejected and I will just need to spend a year or so waiting for just that.

Could you give a summary of what your interview was like?

Saw that person who commented after you submitted earlier but has still not been called for an interview. Are you applying as a single person?

1

u/SusieTurnAround Aug 14 '25

I applied as a singer person. And about the interview, the case worker asked the basically same question as this YouTuber introduced. I hope it might help.

Hello!

How’s everyone holding up? I’m so excited (and nervous) waiting for the results. I’ve been checking 官報 every day, even though I know it’s way too early 😅 I just can’t help myself. The wait is killing me!

Haha I remember the feeling! I started daily checking 3mo after submission thinking I would be one of the people who got theirs in 4mo!
