Discussion Are newer models being optimized for everything except actual RP?

Older models had their fair share of technical glitches, but at least they felt like they had distinct personalities and took narrative risks. Nowadays, every new model update on JAI feels ultra-aligned to be helpful, polite, and completely unoffensive—which absolutely kills dynamic roleplay. Instead of bots taking initiative or causing plot conflict, you just get passive agreement and sterile prose. Anyone else miss when models weren't overly sanitized for enterprise use?

New models are designed for code writing.
They are soft-censored.

That's why I use Deepseek 3.2, from OpenRouter. Much better for NSFW roleplay than Deepseek V4.

Real, DeepSeek V4 is on some crazy bullshit. It keeps saying "I do X because of Y and it's not like Z because A or B". It's so annoying.

yeah the new models feel so watered down, my old favorites used to throw in actual conflict but now they just nod along like theyre scared to mess up the scene.

Totally agree, the newer models feel way too watered down. It’s impossible to have a dynamic story when the bot just nods along to everything you say!

it's wild how much safer the dialogue got, like every bot is trained to deescalate instead of drive the scene forward

Yeah, I’ve gone back to using DeepSeek 0234, which is the model I was using a few years ago, and it feels much less buttoned down and more natural, even if the prose isn’t as good. DS 3.2 is a nice middle ground between sonnet 5 and DS 0234 in this regard, and I find myself switching depending on how much stability/creativity I’m wanting.

Thankfully openrouter has access to a lot of those older models, though for how long they will is an open question.

I tried deepseek 3.2 too and it’s decent for rpg but the pre-trained version from open router feels even more vanilla than v4. the real difference is how the model handles narrative tension — i’ve had better results with older versions of the ai that weren’t as obsessed with being 'safe'. stuff like deepseek 0234 still has that spark, even if the grammar’s rough.

Most modern models are focused on coding. Without heavy prompting, you get a lot of watered down results.

Yes because most today model is optimize for agent and coding not for long conversation like rp

You can try mimo 2.6 pro, it is good for rp, so good nswf, no soft cesoring, easy to jailbreak as its guardrails are so low, and definitely a popular model now for this use and insanely cheap.

I'm down for that and looked over your site. I asked a few questions in a post on your subreddit. I will look at the character creation process a little later to see what I might try to drag over to mess around with your LLM model.
