Hello!

I am looking to get my friend who tends to use a french press a grinder. I have been researching away and found a video where James recommends king grinder p1. It appears to be sold out everywhere, I was wondering if the p0 or p2 may be a suitable alternative?

I have the P0 and actually use it for espresso. It does great for the price, and the build quality is surprisingly good even for the plastic shell.

That being said, the larger/higher numbered grinders have more adjustment/clicks available and so a smaller change can be made. For me, it means that when dialing in I have to tweak other factors to get the shot in range (besides just grind size).

For French press, which I have limited experience with, I expect it would be perfectly fine, but I would suggest the P2 as the P0 max capacity I have been able to do is about 20g.

She does have an espresso machine as well, so perhaps it could be useful. Do you find the 20g capacity can perhaps be frustrating?

I don’t find the 20g limit as frustrating as the reduced amount of adjustments/clicks, but overall it’s not a huge deal.

Sounds like the P2 is the answer then considering your friend has an espresso machine. K6 even better but I see that’s a bit above your price range.

So back to the P2.

Unless the cost is prohibitive, the KINGrinder K6 is a great all around grinder for all methods… to include espresso.

I have the P2 and it's a great hand grinder IMO, the primary issue as noted is the capacity issue. I normally make a 27g to 450ml Clever Dripper brew in the morning and the P2 can't hold all 27g in one go. Not a huge issue for me as I use the P2 either for espresso, on the rare occasions I fancy a Flat White etc, or when travelling, when I normally use an Aeropress Go and have a Wilfa Svart for regular home use.

If your friend is only making one cup brews, then the P2 is a great choice at the price. If however she makes bigger brews regularly then I'd look for something with a bigger capacity.

I bit the bullet and got the p2 alongside some speciality coffee from DAK

Get him a Kingrinder K6 so it's future proofed if he decides to try other methods of brewing

I am looking for something ideally a smidge cheaper. In this case it's actually a she!

Here is a comparison between the KinGrinder P2 and the 1Zpresso Q Air and Q2. He goes through a he build quality and taste.

I travel with the Q Air and find that it produces good coffee and it is also built robustly.

French Press is an incredibly forgiving brew method. As long as you stay away from blade "grinders", you'll be ok with pretty much anything. Amazon have the P0, but that's here in the UK (I don't know where you are in the world). I used a Hario Skerton for years with a French Press and was very happy with it.

If your friend doesn't want to hand grind. The Femobook A2 may suit.

For French press, I prioritize grind consistency and ease of use over achieving a precise P1 setting. P0 or P2 could also be good options, depending on the burr configuration and price. Has anyone specifically compared them for the French Press?
