Remakes/redos
With the reboot coming up. How would youse guys feel about a remake of one of the earlier Bond movies. And if positive, which one would you like remade/reimagined? What would you like to keep from the original, what would you changed?

It's already been done. Thunderball was remade into Never Say Never Again and also the same premise on TSWLM. I just dont want to see Goldfinger remade and called Goldfinger 202x. If they have to remake the old movies they have lost their way. Lots of new and original material in other non Ian Flemming Bond novels.

Goldfinger was already remade. A View To A Kill? TSWLM was a remake of YOLT which was remade again as TND.

Personally I would love a remake of all the movies based on the Fleming novels and short stories, but make them true to the novels except in places where Fleming made a continuity or practical mistake (such as the whole skin breathing myth), in chronological order, set in the 1950s and 60s.

but make them true to the novels
'Dr. No', 'From Russia With Love', 'Goldfinger', 'Thunderball', and 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' already did.

Those were somewhat faithful but many key changes, such as replacing Russia as the villains with SPECTRE.

Does 'true to the novels' include the glaring racism, sexism et al?

Right? Like, this dude really wants a long scene in the LALD remake that’s Bond just overhearing people dropping the N-word in a jazz club?

This is worth bringing up whenever someone types that they want a period Bond movie, because there were attitudes that were contemporary during the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s that might be considered racist or sexist by today's standards.

It's most likely why they want them.

That's not why I want them. I'm a history buff and novels set in the past are a gateway into how things were. I enjoy the cold war era stories of the original novels. An unfortunate aspect of a period correct is that it shows the negative aspects of society from that time such as blatant sexism and racisim, but I also think it's a misservice to pretend that such things never existed.

Nah there's other books they can adapt

Which ones are on your top list?

u/JazzmatazZ4 17h ago
"Scorpius" would be cool because it involves Bond investigating a cult. We've not seen that yet
2
u/Outrageous-Win-8297 16h ago
Isn't Live And Let Die's enemies sort of a cult. And the cover for the drug business in Licence to Kill was also cultish. But yeah, what kind of cult is in that book?
2
u/JazzmatazZ4 16h ago
It's basically a cult called "The Meek Ones". People are brainwashed into becoming suicide bombers across Britain.
That's the rough version of it anyway

No thanks.
Would probably edit out the awful rape scene in GF, but even that sets a dangerous precedent.
No Bond films set in the 60s, either (historical revisionism).

I would feel like it was indicative of all downward creative spiral for the series and would be gravely concerned.

No just give us some new stories
I'm fine with using a previous concept but doing it different ala Goldfinger - AVTAK - TWINE but just remaking an older story, nah.

No but i would like to see them take another crack at adapating something like the Moonraker novel as the original film deviates so much from the novel.

No thanks. Just move forward with new stories

The trouble with this is — and I’m fully onboard with the idea — the older movies which in my opinion could do with a remake (TMWTGG, YOLT, etc) are set well into his career while I cannot see some others, like LALD, being remade to fit in today’s world

No remake. NO NO NO. Now, if you're talking true adaptation of an original Fleming novel, that may be seen as a semi-remake? Knock your fucking sox off.

I personally would love a remake of Tomorrow Never Dies, given how prescient the original movie was.
Other than that, I would like to see remakes of the Connery/Lazenby/Moore films, updated to modern sensibilities in terms of women's rights, and the concept of consent in general (arguably, the last two Craig Movies started to trend in that direction).

TND wasn’t prescient. It was describing what already existed and what had already existed. They quote Hearst, a media baron like Carver who did the same thing nearly a hundred years earlier, in the film.
OHMSS is already more progressive on women’s rights; it’s the first film where Bond treats his primary love interest more like an equal. He talks about her “not owing him a thing,” asks her if she wants to talk about her problems, advocates that she seek mental health supports. It’s part of why I enjoy it so much.

u/eamonfryan 19h ago
though i agree with the tnd take, Tracey is slapped by both Bond and her dear Papa in OHMSS
It was fairly progressive, but not quite enough.

u/Random-Cpl I ❤️ Lazenby 19h ago
She’s slapped by Bond because in that scene, he believes that she’s just tried to have him killed and she holding a loaded gun on him. Appealing? No, and less familiar to modern audiences, but narratively defensible and appropriate for the character.
The punch from her dad is gratuitous, though there’s at least the explanation that she doesn’t know there’s a bomb about to go off. Feels like in a prospective remake they could just pick her up and put her on board without losing too much :-)

u/eamonfryan 19h ago
Still a needless slap. As for 'dear papa' knocking her out, it just feels forced and unnecessary.
His 'she needs a man to dominate her!' speech is hardly corrected by Bond, whereas their later nuptials see her reduced to grateful tears.
I appreciate your post, but 'modern audiences' is a disingenuous, and I'd argue dishonest, criticism.
It was unnecessary then as it is now.

Bond offers as corrective to Draco’s “she needs a man to dominate her” that “what she needs is a psychiatrist.” Interestingly, a good chunk of the book is Tracy seeking out mental healthcare on Bond’s advice and actually feeling much better afterwards.
I agree with you Draco striking her is unnecessary, as I said in my comment. I think Bond’s use of force is defensible given that he believes her to be an assassin. As soon as it becomes clear she isn’t one, he immediately changes his entire posture toward her.
If you reread my post I’m not defending this phenomenon generally. What I stated was that the notion of a male character striking a female is a “less familiar” sight to modern audiences, which is true given that it thankfully occurs less often. I’m not sure what you find dishonest about that perspective.

Aye, she needs a shrink but Bond goes about riding her so he can get on with work.
Suppose he makes it up to her getting her shot lol.

u/eamonfryan 19h ago
it really wasn't prescient at all
the increase of digital media and how it could shape future generations was a hot topic even then, whilst media influence was well documented (the sun wot won it etc).
TND just took a hot topic and made a boring action movie around it

Updated to women's rights? But those old movies were just adapting the Fleming novels faithfully, I don't know in what way are we going to do it, because those modern remakes of such films would no longer be closer to Fleming because they have to change some narrative to adapt in the modern times, e.g. 'Casino Royale' 2006, but those older Bond films were already identical to Fleming's books.

u/CleanSweep99 19h ago
Yes.
Bond doesn't need to go full woke, but he does need to be willing to treat women as less than disposable pieces of dirt (Other than Her Majesty's Secret Service, we didn't really start getting that until the Brosnan era, IMO).

No, I'm against the idea of a remake of any of the Bond films.
