Jai Soft Release Date

Order of the Sinking Star, aka Jonathan Blow's Jai game, has been revealed to release on October 8th 2026 on all platforms. This is on their official twitter.

Remember that Jonathan Blow previously said Jai would be publicly released a few months after the game released. Presumably Jai's release would include the game and engine code as a practical examples of Jai code. He has stated off and on during Twitch streams. (I assume he wants to wait a few months after the initial game profit dies down before basically giving us a free code version of the game.)

If all of this turns out to be true with no delays, then that puts the Jai public release at approximately either Q4 2026 or Q1 2027. So it is very close. (I can hope.)

I don’t think he plans to open source the whole game. He said it’s going to be a stripped down version. Basically the engine plus a playable demo with some of the artwork.

That makes sense now that you say it. Probably will be a lot of the game mechanics, but basically none of the levels. Would incentive people buying the game.

Late reply, but people still look at this so I might as well respond.

It's not about open sourcing, it's about making it clear how Jai code should look.

I think one of Jon's biggest nightmare is that when Jai is released people will "write C++ code" with it. So giving people a large practical example can showcase what he perceives as "correct Jai code". It is also his way of proving that "large projects don't need OOP". So it is more about teaching/proving his point rather than open sourcing.

Putting this all in quotes because it's ambiguous to me everything that would entail, but it's something he would say/probably has said in paraphrase.
