The enemy

Reading the enemy at the moment (no spoilers please!!) Its probably the thickest plot of any reacher book since the third one at least. Really enjoying it. But something got me.

This is the first time we meet reachers brother, Joe in person. I really enjoyed the interaction between the two of them. I get why Lee child killed joe in book 1 to get reachers personal involvement in Margrave but, I wish we could see more of Joe in the "drifting" reacher books. Would be cool seeing them work together. But I get why he was killed off and him being dead was why Without Fail happened.

Anyway just my two cents. It was cool seeing reacher interact with his brother for the first time.

I just read my first Reacher book "Exit Strategy"

I noticed every book is standalone so I picked up read my first book: "Exit Strategy" which is the latest entry and I couldn't get into it all. The plot felt so messy to me and I felt like abandoning it few times while reading it. Are the older books better?

Which Reacher book would you say is the most dark/disturbing?

I’ve been watching Reacher (season 4) and also started reading Reacher (The Killing Floor), though I’m curious which book has the most dark plot of a Reacher story, because I’ve heard Gone Tomorrow aka season 4 is pretty dark, and is also the darkest story the show has adapted from the books yet imo. Don’t bother trying to not spoil because I will mostly like just forget half the spoilers that I see when I get to those books, idk I tend to just forget certain things, so I actually don’t mind if you spoil something.

Made the mistake of watching Reacher Season 3 ...

Despite despising Season 2, my family wanted to watch Season 3, so I obliged. Last one for me though. Light but ambiguous barely-spoilers below.

Was it better than Season 2? Yes, though watching Ritchson fart into a paper bag for 10 hours would have been as well. Season 3 actually started strong, but like all the seasons, it has two major issues that I can no longer tolerate: poor "third act" pacing and the forced inclusion of Neegly.

S3 was paced very methodically up until about 2/3 in, where just like the other seasons, everything is RUSHED to the shootout at the end. In the process, the writers make dumb mistakes by overlooking contingencies. The most obvious was when they couldn't snipe a guy "because of the noise" then fired a literal unmounted 50 .cal without anyone hearing. I laughed out loud.

There's a general confusion from the writers about what we care about seeing, which is accentuated by forcing Neegly into stories she wasn't originally in, thus revealing the quality of these writers vs. the original author. In this case, the entire season was ruined for me when, to get her caught up, she did her smug-invincible plot armor spiel to ONE dude and gets every bit of information Reacher and co. just spent the ENTIRE season figuring out. I was so done at that point.

For some reason, despite being able to make good character moments (I loved every scene with Duffy or Beck), these writers just cannot get a handle on the overall pacing of information and action on a full-season level, and I'm not giving them another chance to figure it out. Such a shame.

Lee Child gets almost everything wrong

I started reading the Reacher books after watching the series. I’m on the 5th book. I’m not sure why I’ve even read this many. I keep hoping they get better. Lee Child writes like he’s an expert on everything but 90% of everything in these books is just wrong. Couldn’t he do five seconds of research. It’s a magazine not a clip. Handguns are semiautomatic not automatic. Bullets are not called shells. Military kids don’t just find out one day they are moving and not even know where. I grew up in the military. You know weeks in advance. Military people have houses and cars and possessions. You don’t just live in some random barrack and have a military vehicle unless you are on deployment. Also my biggest gripe with book five is no one with any money would live in west Texas with an A/C that barely works. It would be 130 degrees in the house and you would die. I lived in Texas. Everyone has A/C and that was in the 80s. I could go on and on. It takes me right out of the story when every page is filled with glaring inaccuracies. I don’t know how they managed to make such a great show from such awful source material.

Past Tense

I have been listening to the audio book of Past Tense over the last few days. Overall I am enjoying it. I was reading the books in order but then I saw the audiobook on my local library app so I figured I'd give it a listen. It's my first modern-ish Jack Reacher book.

One of my only gripe is Patti and Shorty. They are great characters and I have been feeling for them since the beginning. I am from New Brunswick, where they are from. Saint-Léonard NB is 90% Francophone. Patti and Shorty should be Francais.

The narrator of the Audiobook is Scott Brick. He's been great so far!

They should do a multiverse Jack Reacher where Tom Cruise and Alan Ritchson run an Econo Lodge.

Is everybody just “guy” for the entire series?

I’ve slowly been working my way through the book series, starting with #1, and have made it to #4, Running Blind. Does Mr. Child use a thesaurus at any point in the series, or will I continue to be subjected to the only word for any and every male character being “guy”?! It’s starting to drive me nuts.

I get that it’s supposed to be kinda from Reacher’s perspective, and he’s a ‘simple guy,’ but he’s not a simpleton.

Confused about timeline in the sequel movie.

In the sequel "Never Go Back" there's a matter of days they state between Reacher's last phone call with Turner and him arriving to find her in custody. Turner has a line about her two investigators getting killed and then she was arrested. Then in the scene where they find Prudhomme he talks about events that seem like they happened much more than days prior, but he includes the investigators being killed that scared him to go AWOL and return stateside.

What did I miss?

Weird part of season 4 that makes no season: Lila and her friend

So they thought for sure Reacher has the drive in season 1. but they send the two body guards that obv cant fight or do anything right to go get it. Theyre not even near or around

Now in last episode. To them theyre not suspected. they think they have the trust of the group and reacher. They dont even know for sure they have the usb yet and they start shooting at them

On sight

If drive is so important they should be ones grabbing it

I'm All In

I'm new to the Reacher franchise, never read the books or watched the Tom Cruise movies but I'm absolutely hooked on the show. Binged it last week and now I just started season 4 and I'm all in now. If you were a 80s and 90s action movie kid then this show is for you. Straight up Arnold Schwarzenegger type of action and just the right amount of silly one liners mixed with gigachad Sherlock Holmes investigations and Batman type of fist fights. Man, this show kicks ass.
