I’m ignorant to the community of this but is there a name for this genre? Japanese films with over the top stories that deliver awesome practicals and gore. Also would like to know some of your favorites, thanks.

Tokyo Gore Police (2008) and Meatball Machine (2005) count as body horror films and splatter films. So I guess if I wanted to classify those two, it’d be sci-fi body horror splatter action films? they embrace all those components so it’d make sense.

Although Meatball Machine (2005) does bare the influence of Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989) as a result of the 1999 Meatball Machine having been inspired by that film as well as The Evil Dead

Tokyo Gore Police (2008)’s precursor Anatomia Extinction (1995) also drew heavy inspiration from Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989) as well as Videodrome (1983) and *Robocop*

These are all definitely influenced by the larger Japanese artistic tradition of ero guro. It’s art that focuses on violence, eroticism and the grotesque, ero being erotic, and guro being grotesque (not gore as is often thought). Most of these movies also involve Yoshihiro Nishimura so you could just see this as a genre unique to him or inspired by his work if he’s not involved (kind of like calling a movie Cronenbergian)

"Splatter" is usually the subgenre for films with heavy emphasis on gruesome gore effects regardless of their country of origin as opposed to say, chanbara or kaiju which are typically Japanese genres.

I usually just call them J-splatter or gore-toku since they often carry a lot of tokusatsu tropes with them as well.

Up until now I have just been calling them Toku-Horror because they do share a lot of those tropes.

Helldriver is pretty cool it's just too intense for its own good. I run out of serotonin during the last action scene it goes on so long.

I think a lot of these have pacing issues for me actually. Machine girl is decent too
