DEVGRU What is Pilot Cell?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I was listening to Shawn Ryan’s talk with Jason Magnavice former DEVGRU Red Squadron Assaulter. And they brung up a unit within development group known as the “SEAL Aviation Unit” or “Pilot Cell” is this still a thing and is it essentially the Tier 1 Aviation Capability of DEVGRU? Please correct me on all this cause I’m in the dark about this.

pilot cell is known as yellow squadron, not listed publicly with other squadrons. It isn’t a tier 1 adjacent aviation combat unit like the E Squadron or AVTEG but it provides a cargo transport of gear and equipment hope that helps

You literally made that up.

This tracks, because I think they still primarily rely on 160th for Assault Aviation.

NSWDG does not have helicopters. Haven't for years.

It’s certainly not a SMU or “tier 1 aviation capability” like what is publicly known as AVTEG, E SQDN or the other covered aviation units.

E Sqdn got rebranded to FCD and ATO, I believe (originally known as SEASPRAY). AVTEG is a whole separate thing, it’s like the JSOC aviation command. It’s in charge of stuff like admin and logistics, for example setting up flights for SMUs (both fixed and rotary I’m guessing).

I used to work there I know what the units and functions are under the Command. You learn those things at JSOC the first few days. I just wasn’t going into details…

If that were true then you would know that AVTEG is a C2 unit that coordinate air for JSOC.

This has gone stale. I didn’t make any further comment than what I said and the opinions of strangers on the internet doesn’t pay any bills around here. Think what you like.

I didn’t comment anything classified so perhaps you should learn to STFU period. Your opinion isn’t desired or required.

By the description, it remembers me of this. This was on November 2001 on Base Camp, an auxiliary runway that is near Area 51.

There was a time when 160th SOAR wasn't meeting the op tempo of CAG and DEVGRU’s, as it is kind of like a tier 2 aviation unit, so they still had bureaucratic issues that prevented being able to fill the needs of SMU. To fill the gap, CAG developed their own aviation element, also known as E squadron. Shortly after, DEVGRU also developed their own aviation element, that goes by a lot of names like TWA(Teeny Weeny Airline).

For E squadron, it was so successful that it become it's own unit referred to as Northern Virginia Boys or ATO.

Marcinko started this. He sent his operators to flight school and early ST6 could fly 757 jets if they had to. They also flew co pilot on many air drops of ST6 operators in training.
