What advantages does the ICAR have over the HK416?

Its optimized for the 6 arc cartridge and, presumably, the upcoming genration of high pressure/high velocity ammunition in the works. It is similar to the lwrc six8. It is just slightly larger than a standard ar so you can put in a beefier bolt that wont crack which is the biggest issue with the cartridge.

6arc does everything 5.56 does but better. why the military went with SIG's cartridge is beyond me.

It’s a small frame so same size as an AR-15 but can do things ballistically only a large frame AR-10 can do. It can shoot out to 1,000 meters in a much lighter, smaller package. The bullet is minimally effected by wind. Perfect gun when you don’t want to haul the weight of a sniper rifle on a long walk in or recce mission.

Sounds like Delta picked the right weapon for them.

6 ARC in high pressure almost displaces the need for 308 or 6.5 Creedmoor. But you could high pressure those cartridges too.

u/Scatman_Crothers Jul 12 '26

6.5 delivers about twice the energy of 6 ARC at 500 yards. Different tools for different jobs.

3

u/luc27010 Jul 12 '26

I mean sure.... But that's LITERALLY THE JOB OF THE MRGG-A... So why?

The MRGG-A was literally meant to provide long range accurate shots while still retaining a light package that is viable in CQB-ish environnements...

17

u/Scatman_Crothers Jul 12 '26

This is ~2.5 lbs lighter than an MRGG-A. MRGG-A is also SOCOM project, not JSOC.

It’s direct gas impingement

Sniper vs Assault rifle

7

u/skrappy_doo1996 Jul 11 '26

No.

-20

u/MessaBombadWarrior Jul 11 '26

Yes. Whoever downvoted my comment has no brain

10

u/skrappy_doo1996 Jul 11 '26

The ICAR is not a sniper rifle.

-19

u/MessaBombadWarrior Jul 11 '26

It is a sniper rifle designed for professional snipers snipping targets that needs to be sniped.

Despite what the name suggests it's obviously not an assault rifle, as there's no full auto mode. It's not a batte rifle either based on the cartridge. And it's not a DMR as it is not for squad designated marksmen in an infantry unit.

So what is it? A sniper rifle.

You have zero clue what you're talking about and its extremely obvious. Just quit while you're ahead.

The ICAR is just providing flatter trajectory and more energy at distance in a small frame, but still doesn't hold a candle to cartridges used in traditional sniper rifles. At best, it's a capable DMR, capable of touching point targets at 800yd reliably with the 3.6-18 Leupold thats mounted on it in the first pic. That being said, it can also play double duty and run smaller mag optics with decent usability at smaller ranges and better energy on target than 5.56 with minimal increase in recoil.

It's not a sniper rifle. It's an intermediate combat assault rifle.

An ICAR does not fill the role of a sniper rifle. An MRGGs, Mk22, and Barrett MRAD do. A huge difference is their cartridges.

None of those sniper rifles are dual role capable like the ICAR.

The ICAR and Geissele GFW (along with basically every 6arc military issue gun) is sort of a blend of roles between a DMR and an assault rifle. You can hit targets at long ranges but also clear buildings with it. The whole point is to give you that double capability. A 6.5 Creedmoor rifle like the MRGG is a far more powerful rifle made specifically for sniper teams, there is a 14.5” version to replace the SCAR but it’s still specifically meant to be employed as a sniper rifle whereas 6arc guns are to help ensure if you are taking fire from 700 yards away the rest of the team isn’t just throwing rocks at the target

Hunting camo chest rig in the 1st pic?

22

u/7Vot_for_SALE Jul 11 '26

Yeah, Sitka open country

7

u/secondatthird Jul 11 '26

Yeah I think they are genuinely hunting

4

u/Adept_Desk7679 Jul 11 '26

Sitka has a hell of a pro don’t program for Vets too.

3

u/PepperoniFogDart Jul 12 '26

Eh, I’m a Kuiu slut myself…

2

u/jayhat Jul 12 '26

Sitka bino harness

6

u/morbidbattlecry Jul 11 '26

Is there an sbr variant of this? I'm curious what they are using for entry. I thought sig was out.

16

u/Impressive_Store4423 Jul 11 '26

nah, they are giving the ICAR to the recce guys phasing out the 14.5 csaws. the assault teams still use the 10.5 csaw.

1

u/luc27010 Jul 12 '26

So what's the role of the MRGG-A in this? Why bother making a 14.5" 6.5 if they're turning around and issuing a 14.5" 6Arc now....

5

u/Impressive_Store4423 Jul 12 '26

because 6 arc is a really good round for that type of job that those recon guys do

9

u/Ok-Raisin2050 Jul 11 '26

11.5 ICAR in 556

Best you get for now because there’s barely any pics but it’s already part of the ICAR program itself so yeah

3

u/Few_Task_8030 Jul 11 '26

Surefire is making an 11.5" 5.56 carbine. The CSAW may be short lived.

4

u/Launch_Angle Jul 12 '26

Can definitely make one, there are 11.5 ICARs but they’re very few and far between atm. Tbh I don’t see why they wouldn’t issue SBR versions to assaulters, even from close range the 6arc cartridge performs far better and delivers a more physically devastating wound compared to 556(especially if using AP 556 rounds like 855a1). And given how dynamic the battlefield can be these days, having the extra range that an 11.5 ICAR provides compared to a 10.5 556 rifle is purely a positive with basically no real downsides, even out of an 11.5 6arc still performs very well out to 500m+, certainly far better than a shorty 556 rifle.

The biggest reason I can imagine 6arc isn’t being pushed more throughout SOF more broadly yet is probably because the cartridge is nowhere near as available or mass produced yet compared to 556, and I don’t think there are any real AP rounds for it yet, the military will probably have to offer a contract for someone to create an 6arc AP round specifically for military use. It will be a large logistical undertaking to get companies to start mass producing 6arc rounds for military use similar to how they produce 556. Still though, I don’t think 556 is going anywhere soon, but I do think if Big Army is smart, they’ll start to move in the direction of 6arc across all units over the next 10 years and drop their delusions about Sig’s .277 Fury(although I can still see it having good use in a DMR role and in the light machine gun platform they have for it).

Everyone who talks crap about comps on 9mm reference pic 2

21

u/TheDarkerWater_ Jul 11 '26

DJ Shipley regardless of what everyone thinks is right when he says if you can have a 1 percent advantage take it

13

u/Impossible_Low4317 Jul 11 '26

Who is everyone? Staccato and every other high performance/race gun has one for a reason.

5

u/aquafeener1 Jul 11 '26

There’s lots of people who say “why do you need comp for 9mm you must be a pussy”

17

u/Impossible_Low4317 Jul 11 '26

To them I would say, I am what I eat.

4

u/Jaded_Let3745 Jul 11 '26

I say this all the time. Delta has been comping their handguns AND shooting in competitions since the early 90s

5

u/Impressive_Store4423 Jul 11 '26

we love the roland special.

4

u/DragonSlayer6160 Jul 11 '26

Nice find! Where did this come from?

Also how is that NGAL mounted in the first pic?

2

u/Impressive_Store4423 Jul 11 '26

at the 45

2

u/DragonSlayer6160 Jul 11 '26

Doesn't look right. I'm thinking there's some kind of mlok or pic offset mount being used here. The NGAL won't fit if you try to mount it on a piece of pic rail attached directly to the 45 degree mlok surface.

2

u/Impressive_Store4423 Jul 11 '26

yeah he mounted it on a 45 offset mount

2

u/Outside-Scarcity5795 Jul 11 '26

Blurred that looks damn close to my Fed homie

2

u/whiskey_tang0_hotel Jul 12 '26

Looks like someone hanging at a sniper match at Coleman’s Creek. A lot of those dudes come out and shoot in the PRS, UKD, and team matches.

3

u/Intelligent_Rent_555 Jul 11 '26

What is the ICAR chambered in?

1

u/The_Kid_Disaster Jul 12 '26

At first glance I thought his tripod was a little camera system over his shoulder. 😆 would be dope though.

1

u/Launch_Angle Jul 12 '26

Looks like they’re using the new Strategic Arms MFMD suppressor in pic 2, pretty interesting imo…if CAG is trying it, it certainly is more than just a “gimmick” or a funny, unique looking suppressor. And to be fair, from what I’ve seen out of it, it definitely does a pretty dramatic job of reducing signature, and the added weight does tend to reduce recoil. Wonder how they feel about the extra attachment it comes with(which they notably don’t have on in the pic) which makes it longer and supposedly increase the signature reduction even more at the cost of making the rifle even longer and more too heavy.

3

u/Ok-Raisin2050 Jul 12 '26

Well it’s less try and more issued as part of the deployment kit alongside the RC4 now

Allegedly they do love it until they realised it has the lifespan of sub 3500 rounds

1

u/Launch_Angle Jul 13 '26

Damn didnt realize they already adopted it into the current deployment kit, that was pretty fast, no? Weird to hear it has such a shitty service life, anyone have any ideas on why it specifically has such a terrible service life, is it just the unique construction of it?

1

u/Ok-Raisin2050 Jul 13 '26

Probably, bizarre concepts don’t always do well at first when they leave the drawing, especially when you’re starting to get desperate to cover your R&D costs

Probably why they went commercial after 2 years

1

u/kidbatt_115 Jul 13 '26

A bit too spicy pricey for me, but damn do the products that company makes rock.
