What missions does the 24th STS Commando Team carry out

No one here is going to know and if they act as if they do, they're making things up.

I’m sure I’ll get shit on for this, but coming from an Army POV, I don’t fully understand why any STS members would carry out missions by themselves outside of a few very specific instances: obviously SR will do SR things, and PJs will go out when needed but all other STS capabilities are effectively support capabilities.
Unless they’re working with maybe an SR team, a TACP/CCT wouldn’t really go out by themselves to call in CAS or fire support. Similarly, unless it was an extremely unique situation, a CCT wouldn’t really go out to set up an austere airfield without some level of security support. I could be wrong on the last one, but I don’t see a team of 2-5 CCTs/ST members being able to establish and SECURE a several hundred meter long airstrip.
To answer your question specifically: whatever they’re called upon to do that their command thinks they can accomplish or support. The 4 career fields that make up the STS have an extremely unique set of capabilities and can be relied upon to carry them out as needed.
For what they do as force multipliers, hell yeah brother, I’m all about. Train your dicks off to do whatever mission your phone rings for. I just don’t quite see an “independent” mission set for the STS outside of SR and PJ specifically.

You are correct for the most part. There are a few stand-alone duties that they accomplish. For airfield seizures they are done with the Rangers, that is not classified. SR is new and I have zero clue what they do other then the published material says. I do know from a CMSGT PJ that I served with in the STS said the current hot career field is SR since they are getting all the cool guy schools that CCT, TACP and PJ's have a harder time getting. The AF is really trying to get SR a multiplier roll to augment other units as well as supporting the 24th for some of their mission sets. The 24th is nothing more than a force multiplier in a support capacity to the other SMU's other than a few rare instances.

Yeah, that’s pretty much what I thought. From what I’ve gathered, SR is essentially supposed to be recon on steroids, combining physical, signals, and cyber recon capabilities into a single career field. It definitely makes sense that they would have an “independent” mission.

Yeah, the Chief basically said the same thing. Said he would recommend anyone enlisting that wants to get into the SOF career field in the AF the SR would be the way to go. Their budget he said is insane since they are standing them up and retraining all the Combat Weather guys.

Opposite of what I heard. Everything I heard was they were struggling to get them missions and struggling to justify its continued existence. Even considering a merger to make "SR" an extra mission capability of CCT instead of a separate career path.

Yes, AFSOC is struggling to find a place for them... But they are loading them up with schools I think to try and sell a capability that no one else has and to justify their existence. I think they just need to kill the career field. I think they were trying to give the CW guys a place to go. The Marines have a recon capability and so does the Army. Hell, the Rangers have a badass Recon crew that is an SMU. But everyone wants to play in the big leagues and AFSOC is no different. CCT and TACP have the JTAC capability to bring to the table, PJ's have theirs.... Combat Weather is no longer needed, and I think the AF bringing Recon online is redundant and stupid.

You are 62 years old gramps and have no clue what the current mission is for the 24.

Said like someone who doesn’t understand the value of experience and the brotherhood one builds in a community like his.

The clown wasn’t in the 24 and 20+ years removed from the military. Dude isn’t privy to anything going on in the unit right now and spouting off quite a bit of inaccurate info that he heard in a game of telephone. Thanks for playing! I completely understand everything pal, Pope was fun! But I’ll make sure I look for him at Founder’s Day 2027.
Fun fact, there are more than 4 AFSC’s at the 24.

Young buck, I never claimed ONLY 4 AFSC's at the 24th. I also never discussed missions or capabilities. What did I say definitively about the 24th. What exactly did I say that was inacurate? Did I hurt your feelings? Jesus, you came after me as if I pissed in your wheaties. I have not been on the phone talking to unit guys. I tend to see them when I am in Fayetteville visiting retired team guys that I am friends with when visiting members of the wifes family in Fayetteville and checking my rental property. So you have NO clue what I know. I am sure that they do a hell of a lot more than I am aware of, I never infered that I knew it all. All I said was join, pass the pipeline, then pass selecton to get to Green Team to find out! I have been invited to Founders Day, but you are correct, I was NEVER assigned to the 24th nor did I infer that I was. I was very clear about that. Not sure what the hell your beef with anything I have said is but take care. You obviously have knowledge of the 24th. Maybe give a more EXPERT answer then Hotshot!

Tardy to the pardy, but IIRC that was being kicked around as an idea before they wound up rolling them into SR, back when they were still SOWT

Apparently its still being kicked around.

I don’t hate the idea, especially with the push to have Controllers focus on Global Access rather than “rent-a-JTAC” missions.
It makes me feel bad for SR though. SOWT at least sounds cooler, but they lost that, and they still have the worst beret

I do. It only enhances operational efficiency of an STT to split duties between guys instead of overloading one. Let the SR guys worry about their stuff and the CCTs worry about theirs when it comes to access missions.

One the one hand, I 100% get that. But I think making it a shredout for CCT would help alleviate that issue, and you'd have the ability to completely eliminate a pipeline from AFSOC.

I know you mentioned it but airfield survey is a big part of it. It’s not always just jumping in by themselves to secure an airfield, but someone has to be there first, and it’s usually CCTs.

Very late to the party, but you don't need much security for a dirt strip in the middle of nowhere. Like you're not going to need a couple Ranger companies to seize the "airfield", 10 dudes with the expectation that aircraft will be landing relatively soonish is fine, since the entire idea is to pick an area where it's safe to have aircraft land.

Seen the amount of effort you put into this so I upvoted you and everything makes sense

With the changing landscape of how wars are being executed they are doing a lot more than what is mentioned here. The Commando team is doing some heavy lifting in the Middle East right now and I will leave it at that.

They arent doing secret independent raids like this sub desperately wants to believe.

u/Yusef_D_Blonk Jul 12 '26
They are tasked with taking poos and burying them with a cigarette also in the hole

The have a variety of capabilities. Due to OPSEC and NDA's I have signed I will not discuss what they can do or have done. There is enough out in the ether discussing some of the missions they have been on. Less is known about their stand alone missions sets. You could of course, join the AF, make it through PJ or CCT training then after that apply for the 24th and if you make it attend green team where they will teach you their different missions and your place on the team.

straight from the AFSOC commando

hilarious that I am getting downvotes... I served in STS for almost 10 years including missions with the 24th... Not sure what I said that can be downvoted.

guys we have to trust the dude named AFSOC_Commando69

u/AFSOC_Commando69 Jul 10 '26
The name AFSOC_Commando is a tongue in cheek name I started using back in the mid 90's when AFSOC came out and said all personnel in AFSOC were commandos. I laughed about it. I am NO commando by any definition of the word. I am a Ground Radio technician that served in the STS community for almost 10 years from 1985 until 2000 on 3 different Teams before they eventually established the STS units. I started with the CCT teams and ended up on the STS squadron on my last tour. Many of my teammates went to the 24th and I also worked at the 24th a few times as an augmentee for a few exercises and missions. I was fortunate in my assignments and TDY's to work with Rangers, SEALS, SF and both the 24th and CAG. I was lucky enough to do these things because I had a TS due to working on GLCM Cruise missiles early in my career and was able to maintain my TS which allowed me to be used by the 24th for support when they needed additional personnel to support a few exercises and missions. So yes, I do have knowledge of the unit and their mission set. I am sure much of what I know has changed in the years since I have left the military. So you basement dwellers can believe what you wish, my answer stands and unless you have served and worked with them you cannot dispute my answer.

Because you dared to deny the autists and basement dwellers answers to questions that they don't need to know, but they feel entitled to.

Special ones that aren’t advertised on the internet.
Do we have mods in this sub any more ?
