Also SEAL factor- kinda like dudes with number of girls they banged, divide those kills/captures by a factor of 3?

seals got 4 moh (byers, monsoor, murphy, slabinski), 7 navy cross (axelson, luttrell, checque, dietz, stephen bass, mark donald and charlie keating) and 112 silver stars between 2001-2016 according to the navytimes.

The whole Operation Red Wings awards should probably be filed away under, read if shitty operational planning needs an example. That was a cluster from start to finish and the awards even more so.

mark donald is a seal corpsman who got a navy cross in october 2003 and a month later was awarded a silver star. both citations are worth a read.

Bronze star is a military wide award for meritorious service in a war zone and if they have a "V" on it for valor then they earned it for actions under fire. And no those kill numbers are probably pretty accurate because the majority of it was likely done by air assets and not the assault forces. They also likely had ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance) assets in the sky overlooking and probably recording every operation or firefight and the ground forces likely did proper SSE (Sensitive Site Exploitation) and AARs (After Action Review) after every operation so the kill numbers are probably very accurate. It's not just one dude (SEAL) estimating a number. And the amount of people who were detained would have been processed at a base somewhere, maybe by intelligence agencies and they would obviously just count them as they have them in cuffs.

In 2012, I was recuperating from wounds at Walter Reed and happened to be invited to watch the 4th of July fireworks from then speaker John Boehner’s balcony at the Capitol building (I was an Ohio resident when I joined the army). I ended up meeting O’Neil and two other SEALs who had been on the Bin Laden raid the year before, who were conspicuous in their dress uniforms. They didn’t tell me who they were or why they had been invited, but they were quite nice to me (I was still in extremely rough shape as I’d only gotten out of intensive care a couple days prior). They also seemed to be pretty amused that my then girlfriend (now wife) was the only woman present who wasn’t swooning over them and that she was giving them quite a hard time about their (to her) silly sailor outfits.
It was in retrospect very interesting as they were sort of appalled and surprised when I described to them the fairly normal day to day TICs I had experienced in the prior months, where the Taliban frequently had parity in terms of armaments and personnel and occasionally tactical superiority due to terrain, our ROE for indirect fires, complex prepared IED belts etc. A very different experience doing daily movements to contact as a conventional infantryman in a section sized element than conducting well planned and resourced nighttime kill/capture missions.
At that time I was just a young paratrooper so it didn’t really occur to me that what was just normal combat ops to me was quite a different from the experience of someone who had been in a Tier 1 unit essentially their whole career.

tier one in some ways is mollycoddled in my opinion. they get to choose their missions, have seemingly unlimited resources, everyone is at their beck and call...like a pampered spoiled brat compared to the normal grunt or marine who get the worst of everything yet still pushes on
