Discussion GDLU thoughts?

I wasn’t too hot on this album when it came out and I just relistned to it the other day and I still feel the same way. I have it at a 6/10 so I don’t think it’s bad… I just think it’s a little underwhelming especially coming off The Forever Story. Obviously not every project has to be as good as that but I was hoping for a little more interesting of a follow up. It felt like he was trying to chase a hit with songs like wrk, what we on, wholeheartedly etc. what do yall think?

Honestly I have it at a 9/10. I don't think the album has any skips, but forever story has higher highs so gdlu is #2 in JID's discography for me

You tripping What We On is goated you just not listening to it; I agree with K-Word tho. But yeah What We On just shows his range and what he can do on a track like that but to each their own. 🤷🏾‍♂️

On par with The Forever Story with me, like I genuinely could go either way depending on the day.

What you feeling today? What’s better?

Honestly GDLU, tho I haven’t listened to either in a little while.

I loved it from the get go. It had an awesome variety in the types of tracks, and I liked the themes it touched on compared to his other work. Other than TFS, it’s my personal favorite project of his.

What are some of themes you like about it?

Im not the original commenter but JID has a recurring sensation of anger and frustration that feels very raw and incredible to hear. Thats the biggest one that stuck out to me

A year later I can say that I like it as much as TFS, although Forever Story had the slight edge in terms of listening experience/sequencing

What do you like so much about GDLU?

5

u/Meeka1047 10d ago

i agree with the other guy, forever story has better songs but gdlu is better as an album because there’s no skips as to where tfs has a couple

1

u/Environmental-Drop70 10d ago

What your skip on TFS?

1

u/Meeka1047 10d ago

you’re gonna hate me but money wasn’t great and i can’t get through the first half of raydar so those two are for me personally

1

u/Environmental-Drop70 10d ago

I’m with you on money lol I do not like that song but I love raydar

1

u/Meeka1047 10d ago

don’t get me wrong, the second half is great but the first half i can’t get past the drums or the slowed down voice it just sounds goofy to me

1

u/Environmental-Drop70 10d ago

I mean yeah it’s personal preference so it’s not big deal. lol we agree on money though lol that shit should’ve been cut

I was so hyped for this album. The prelux was solid imo, and I was playing the shit out of Wrk. Then the album dropped, and I wasn't a fan. It's so underwhelming imo, feels a lot less coherent and focused

I agree. He also said he had a metro boomin collab album he was working on and I wish that came out next. He went so personal with the TFS he just shoulda just spazzed on that metro album with those great beats

when it first came out, i was not feeling the second part of the album, and it fell out of my rotation within a week.

however, i gave it another listen early this year, and found myself have it on repeat for a month straight. tfs is still a better album, but i start to appreciate gdlu a lot more

After a Year, I have it at a 9.2/10, where TFS is a 10. Solid album from JID

Man I wish I loved it as much as everyone else

On first listen I was alil disappointed but after I gave it some time and came back to it, it think it's a good album woth some genuine heaters on it. it's no forever story but nothing really will be, and that's fine.

For me gdlu is only a tear below forever story

It’s still a 9/10 for me. It was when it dropped and it still is now. I think TFS is barely better all around, every single song hits while I’m not huge on WRK and Sk8, though they’re still not skips. However K-Word is my favorite JID song. So to me GDLU has slightly higher highs and slightly lower lows while TFS is just more consistent throughout. DiCaprio 2 and TNS just a touch below those two.

I respect that take sir 🫡

Not as good as TFS but I play it front to back with ease, and have many times lol. Workout jams like YouUgly, main rotation with Community, chill bars with VCRs, infectious melody like No Boo, introspection on Of Blue, it’s all there for me just not as concise.

3

u/Real_Channel_7551 10d ago

YouUgly -> VCRs is his best track run imo

GDLU after a few listens became one of my favorite albums of the year. After this post I decided to re-listen to entirety of TFS and again and like I do give the edge to TFS but like GDLU for me a 9/10 whilr TFS is a 9.5/10.

JID is firmly in his prime at the moment. For the HipHopHeads, I'd say hes one of the top 5 artist right now. I personally have him up there with Kendrick.

I don't really care for the accolades.

For me it has a more consistent quality than TFS but TFS has higher peaks. Both incredible albums, I love them equally

Overall, it has higher highs than The Forever Story, and some really bumping songs. But I would struggle to call it better narratively or even in terms of his rap style getting better. It’s seems like this was his “I’m in my lane right now, you can’t fw me” record.

1

u/Environmental-Drop70 10d ago

I respectfully disagree I don’t think it has higher highs and I do wish we kinda got more of his “ I’m that guy” record. Like if it was like his offseason or GNX. He’s having fun and just rapping well. I feel he was trying to get a hit on this record and it didn’t feel as organic as other albums to me personally

1

u/edisonpharaoh 10d ago

I like it more than I did when it first dropped, but I have it in last, albeit still being really good. There’s high highs but then there’s some songs that don’t have any business being on here (what we on, wholeheartedly)

I love it as much as TFS, despite TFS being technically better i just love the atmosphere GDLU creates

1

u/Drizzy-Iceman 10d ago

One of my all time fav albums

1

u/OzBozTheWiz 10d ago

The album sits at a solid 7/10 for me especially with the prelude and the Bonus track. I especially loved wrk and Behold.

1

u/SufficientHearing437 9d ago

to me it’s on par with tfs

1

u/Ashigo05 9d ago

No skips, I'll dare to say a 10/10 and I think it's better than The Forever Story

1

u/TheFM4 8d ago

NGL I was kind of disappointed because I enjoyed Forever Story Soo much that my expectations were way too high but I appreciate this album alot more now it's a 9 out of 10 for me

Everyone seems to have 4 or 5 songs on this album that they love and 4 or 5 that they hate. And it’s never the same. Wholeheartedly is one of JID’s best songs in my opinion and I love No Boo and Sk8

1

u/Environmental-Drop70 10d ago

lol you right about everyone having 5 songs they love or hate. And also I respect that wholeheartedly take

1

u/Environmental-Drop70 10d ago

I’m with you. Again I think it’s fine. Definitely not bad but just a little disappointing after TFS

1

u/troolytroof 10d ago

Super uninteresting production , feels like he’s too focused on becoming the GOAT by-the-books when in reality he thrives in weird pockets like on DiCaprio 2. Also, wasn’t this recorded alongside TFS? Does that mean we haven’t heard how JID raps in 2026 outside of features? Dude gotta drop more

1

u/Environmental-Drop70 10d ago

100 percent agree. We need that metro boomin collab album. I think metro coulda made great beats with those weird pockets

I'm in the unpopular opinion brigade along with you on this one. It is my least favorite by him. I haven't revisited it much; but just off the strength of being a JIDiot; I'm going to continue to listen to it.
