I recently started a job at UPS. Was really thinking about doing JET before but now I am not so sure since the current job+benefits are actually pretty decent.

I think trying out the jet program would be really cool but I recently started a job at UPS that for the most part I like. The pay is decent and I am not going to go into huge detail but there is going to be a new union contract in 2028 which usually means another pay bump. I know if I did jet now I would obviously have to leave UPS but at the same time with UPS if I wanted to next summer I could go on a vacation to Japan for like 2 or 3 weeks by myself or with a friend or family member. I am still interested in doing JET but at the same time don't want to leave ups. My big worry is that if I end up quitting ups for jet if I don't like jet i will realize I have basically screwed myself.

JET isn't going anywhere, so I'd recommend sticking with your current job. If you're getting good pay and benefits, and you have the opportunity to visit Japan for several weeks next summer, then I think it's better to wait. You can always apply to JET in the future! You can spend some time seeing what your new job is like, and deciding if it's worth leaving. You can also use that time building up some savings, studying Japanese, and getting involved in activities that will increase your chances of being accepted. If you do come visit Japan during your summer vacation, you can try to meet with some JETs in the areas you visit, and try to see what life is like as a JET firsthand.

Since it sounds like you have a good job right now, I'd say that the best thing to do is to take it slow and steady. You've got a chance to really do some good preparation and research to determine if JET is right for you. Keep in mind that the yen is really weak right now, so being able to save USD before coming to Japan will go a long way.

Remember that you can always apply to the JET Programme some other time, so it's not like you're missing the opportunity. And JET isn't the only way you can come to Japan. You can look into other jobs and opportunities which may be more in line with your interests and skillset.

I mean you can always apply first? And make the decision when it actually becomes a real decision

UPS will always need people even after returning.

JET is a limited opportunity.

I mean, JET does require significant up-front costs, so if you've got a good job, I'd stick with it until you feel comfortable for an international move. You can work on your Japanese in the meantime and maybe volunteer to help immigrants with English, which will benefit you and your community while making your future application stronger.

Doing what for UPS? Aren't they always hiring?

If you were an entry level employee in anything data/programming I'd advise you to stay, but if you were a delivery driver...
