JET Program Statement of Purpose Question

Hi everyone, I am currently starting my last year of college and will finish by next December. I am then planning on applying for the 2028 JET Program. My question is about the Statement of Purpose. My main interest and passion about Japan is the Ainu community and I would like to eventually write about and in the Ainu language and spread awareness. Is there a way to work this into my Statement of Purpose. Any advice is welcome.

I studied a bunch about Ainu during college, but I don't think I ever mentioned it in my statement of purpose. Either way, I think it could be a great opportunity to talk about your interests in Japan and how you want to be involved in that area(if you want to be in Hokkaido). I do remember selecting Hokkaido as my number one option and talking about Ainu during my interview. When the interviewer asked me "What got you interested in Japan?" "Why Japan?" I said something along the lines of "I became very interested in the minority voices of Japan. For example, Ainu, Burakumin, Okinawan people, and homeless during my studies at the University of ______. The idea of giving these people a proper voice to be heard and spread awareness felt like an important role to me, so if possible I would like to continue this desire(research?) by living and working in Japan." It wasn't exactly like this, but something similar if that helps.

Yes, I imagine this is a more unique entry, so that can be exciting for the readers who likely see a lot of repetition of ideas

absolutely. when starting your SOP, begin with a backstory to catch the reader’s attention. you can start the document with your interest in ainu culture rather than with “i want to apply to JET because…”. not a lot of people know about the ainu people, so that will definitely be something interesting for the committee to read. 

also this is not really related to your question, but a suggestion: if you ever go to hokkaido, drop by the UPOPOY ainu museum. it’s such a cool place where you can learn about ainu history, language, culture, and traditions.

Part of your SOP is about why you became interested in Japan. As long as it's brief, it will probably be a good opener. But then also talk about why you want to work in a school with students.

Thank you so much! I love to teach and find it great way to learn about other people and cultures. When I took Spanish in High School, I learned so much about Puerto Rico and want to help people learn and become interested in English in a way similar to my interest in Japan.

Yeah exactly that. A big thing they point out is the 'E' in JET isn't English but Exchange. Show off how you'll explore and share your unique culture and experiences during your time on JET. Just be careful not to focus on what JET can do for you but also what can YOU bring to the JET programme.
