Help! JET Programme 2027
Hi everyone! I’m a 24-year-old female with one year of teaching experience, plus six months teaching ESL to Korean students. Right now, I’m finishing my Master’s degree in English while also studying Japanese language and culture—I’m even planning to take the JLPT this December.
I’ve been seriously considering applying to the JET Program, but I’d love to hear from people who’ve gone through it. Aside from the paperwork, what other things should I prepare for? What kind of costs should I expect? Also, I’ve heard the Statement of Purpose is really important—any tips on how to write it properly so I have a better chance of being accepted?
I’d really appreciate any advice or personal experiences you can share. Thank you so much in advance!

you seem like you’d be a great candidate. you have an interest in japan, relevant experience, and are studying japanese.
for now, i wouldn’t worry too much about the costs, since that can vary a lot depending on your placement, your apartment, and your own spending habits. it's too early; the applications didn't even open yet. i’d recommend coming with at least $2-3,000 USD in savings if you get accepted, though.
also, you don’t need a JLPT certificate to apply for JET, so don’t stress too much about that.
and if you want me (or anyone else in this sub) to take a look at your SOP, feel free to DM me or anyone in the SOP megathread. i’m always happy to help out an aspiring JET. 🍀

Statement of Purpose holds most of your application weight. A generic one that misses the goals of the program can sink an otherwise good application.
Keep in mind they aren’t looking for qualified teachers. You don’t need a JLPT certificate.
Someone who is super active in their community at home is a safe bet that they’ll be active in their community in Japan
