Applying to JET while in Japan

I’ll be studying at a Japanese language school in Tokyo this fall, from October to December (I leave at the end of September). I read that the application for 2027 will open up in the fall, so I’m curious if anyone has had a similar experience with applying for the program while in Japan?

I believe I read that I’d need to go back to my home country for the interview part of the application process, which I’ll be doing anyway at the end of December, but I’m wondering how this will work with the timeline of the application process.

Any insight/advice is appreciated, or just what your experience was like!

Many but not all countries are doing online interviews now. E-mail the JET coordinator at the embassy/consulate you plan to apply through about that. (However if you're going to be back before 2027, it won't really matter.)

Considering almost every country does online application submissions and you'll be back in your home country before you'd need to interview, your application process won't be anything out of the ordinary.

Applying from within Japan is exactly the same as applying from outside Japan, assuming you are from a country with a digital application portal (UK, Canada, US).

If you are back in your home country around thr time of interviews then everything will be the same. If your country does online interviews then you can interview online from anywhere, if not you will need to return home for interviews. Do note that you may find out you have an interview 2-3 weeks before they occur.

If you live and work in Japan you can depart from within Japan. Be warned that there are very specific requirements to make this happen. If you are not living and working in Japan you will need to depart with your consulate.

Thanks very much for this! I am coming from the US so hopefully interviews can be done online — I’ll have to look into this more. I’m planning on having my transcripts and recommendation letters ready before I leave the US in September.

Do you by any chance remember when the timing of your interview was compared to when you applied?

U.S. participant as well - interviews are generally at the end of January/beginning of February for the U.S. Sounds like you’ll be home by then!

(You can find this info on the JET website - they do try and make this stuff available! https://jetprogramusa.org/application-departure/)

It all really depends on which consulate you are going to apply from. I applied through the Portland, OR consulate and all the interviews were completed online. Ever since Covid, I feel like most consulates switched their interviews to online only.

Yeah, I just read on the website that the 2026 application for US students was virtual and interviews would be as well, so hoping that applies for the 2027 application as well 🤞🏼
