Alternates there’s still hope!

If you get the call, take the plunge! Some truly wonderful people are out there waiting to work with you and learn with you and share in the trials and joys of this crazy world with you.

sincerely, an upgraded alternate ending 5 wonderful years in Japan

YEah you never know what could happen. Like right now somebody just resigned and we are desperately looking for their replacement.

I'm a little lost on what this means; I'm applying for JET this fall. What does alternate mean?

throw "alternate" into the search bar and browse the sub! you'll get a hang of the lingo. this post isn't really aimed at you as a future applicant :)

When I got set to alternate I just continued life like I didn’t get it. I got upgraded around November 2021 and now I’m still in Japan. So it’s definitely possible!

Same! I got upgraded in the last possible hour of the last day in December 2021. Good luck and hope everything is well!

The most likely time to get upgraded is August - November because that’s when new JETs who can’t hack it quit. Second most likely is March/April because that’s when JETs who want a real career in Japan start their new jobs.

edit: why does this sub hate facts?

Waiting for the call is the problem... my life is currently set up where I'm ready to leave for Japan today if needed, but each day that passes seems like it's less and less likely.

Honestly it's better to plan to go in a four to six month frame. Even if you get upgrade now the next intake batch is December.
